Nowadays, the number of people who speak English takes up the largest proportion in the world. According to the interactional view, people learn English as a communicative tool, whose main use is to build up and maintain social relations between people. Speaking, as a basic tool for communication, is such an important part in everyday interaction that deserves more time and effort in language teaching. However, English speaking has been neglected in Senior High English teaching and as a result, students’ speaking competence is far from satisfactory.Teachers should undertake the responsibility to prepare students as much as possible to be able to speak in English both in the real world and in the classroom. However, in terms of college entrance exam system and restrictions of various factors, most English teachers don’t concentrate more attention on learner’s speaking competence. Learners’ speaking competence falls behind relatively.This study intends to find out the effect of the mind mapping-based English teaching on learners’ speaking competence. 61 learners, who came from Grade One of a senior high school in Zhangwu, participated in the experimental study.The study lasted for 4 months, from September, 2013 to January, 2014. The experiment was executed into two parts---an experimental class and a control class. The first step was that both groups were given a pre-test to measure their speaking competence. Then the two classes were taught in two different approaches---the control group taught by traditional approach and the experimental group taught by Mind Mapping-based English teaching. At the end of the experiment, a post- test was designed so as to examine the effect of the Mind Mapping-based English teaching approach. Finally these results were analyzed rationally.After the four months lasted experimental study, it proves that Mind Mapping-based English teaching is the effective strategy in English speaking teaching and can improve learner’s speaking competence.
