According to the New English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools, the teaching of English reading has occupied a prominent position among the four basic skills. Improving students’ reading competence is one of the objectives of Senior English teaching. Reading is an essential ability to learn a language. It is the foundation of mastering a language. And it is also a main tool to obtain information. But the current situation is that the teaching of English reading emphasizes the learning of language points but ignores the developments of students’ language learning strategy use. Thus, the improvement of reading proficiency is limited.In order to solve the problem, the author does an experiment of English reading teaching based on constructivism. The experiment is attempting to explore whether the English reading teaching based on constructivism in Senior High School can improve the students’cooperative awareness, intrinsic motivation and reading proficiency. Both qualitative and quantitative study are conducted in the experiment. Two classes are randomly chosen as control class and experimental class in Hai Cheng Tongze Senior High School. The participants involved in the study are 100 students. The pre-test and post-test are carried out for the students in both classes. Furthermore, questionnaires and interview are adopted to collect data. The experiment is analyzed by software SPSS 11.5.The experiment aims to answer the following questions:1. Can the English reading teaching based on constructivism promote the students’cooperative awareness?2. Can the English reading teaching based on constructivism enhance students’ intrinsic motivation?3. Does the English reading teaching based on constructivism improve the students’ reading proficiency?The results of the experiment show that comparing with the traditional teaching method, English reading based on Constructivism can improve the students’ cooperative awareness, intrinsic motivation and reading proficiency. Therefore, it is feasible to be implemented in senior high school English reading.
