Studies On Disciplinary Differences In Quality Satisfaction Of Doctorate Education In Nanjing University

The enrollment scale of doctoral students is expanding rapidly,which provides more opportunities for university students to further their studies on one hand and brings some problems on the other:more people question the education quality of doctoral students. With the outstanding of the problem, how to measure and evaluate the quality of the doctoral education increasingly become the focus of attention. Although how to measure quality is still controversial, but because of the "student-centered" and "people-oriented" education ideology, more educators agreed that the student is the most qualified to voice as the subject of education.Student satisfaction survey is just the production of the education thought. Schools can apply the student satisfaction survey to not only evaluate the education quality, but also to improve the quality and promote education reform based on the findings.Conducting the students satisfaction survey has become important and new perspective which can not be ignored to assess and evaluate quality in higher education.Doctoral students are the subjects of education.Therefore,by quality satisfaction survey, we can find the problems in the doctoral education and try to put forward appropriate counterplans and suggestions to improve the education.In addition to this, recent studies suggest that there is big difference on different discipline students’ satisfaction at education quality.Nanjing University is a typical representative of the comprehensive research university, its numbers of doctoral students and different disciplines are much bigger than other universities in Jiangsu Province. And the author studied in Nanjing University, it’s much convenient in sampling and researching.To reveal the research questions about the school’s doctoral education quality satisfaction status, if there is disciplinary difference between students satisfaction in quality of doctoral education, the difference is significant or not, the reasons and influencing factors behind the differences, if demographical variables including gender, grade, training type, and with or without working experience have significant effect on the different disciplines doctoral education quality satisfaction or not,272 Nanjing University doctoral students who come from four different disciplines, namely, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science Department, Engineering and Medicine are selected to implement the satisfaction questionnaire and interview survey. Hope we can trough survey and solve the above problems, put forward targeted countermeasures and suggestions, also be able to offer contrast data for other same type universities about doctoral quality research at the same time by study on Nanjing University.By statistical analysis with the statistical software SPSS 17.0 and qualitative analysis of interviews, the leading results are revealed as follows:(1)The overall score of satisfaction is 4.077, which indicates the Nanjing University doctoral students are quite satisfied about the education quality;(2)When it comes to the each dimension satisfaction score, the guidance of tutors satisfaction score is 4.124, academic support satisfaction score is 3.957 and the overall score for assessment is 4.169. Comparatively, the doctoral students are not very satisfied with the school’s academic support;(3)The scores of Doctoral students satisfaction are quite different, when the doctoral students are not in the same disciplines and the differences are very significant:As to the results of the whole education quality, the Humanities and Social Sciences doctoral students satisfaction score is the highest. The score has significant difference in Science Department, obvious difference in Engineering, and significant difference in Medicine.On the dimension of tutoring, the Humanities and Social Sciences doctoral students are more satisfied than other disciplines students. The gap is very significant for students from Science Department and Engineering.On the dimension of academic support, there is no obvious difference among these four disciplines, because all the students’ satisfaction scores are not very high. They all have some dissatisfaction at this. Some measure must be taken to change the troubled situation by the related schools.On the overall assessment, the doctoral students from the Humanities and Social Sciences are also much more satisfied than any other students. There is extremely significant difference between Humanities and Social Sciences and Science, very significant difference with Engineering students, and obvious difference with Medicine students.(4) Demographical variables, including gender, grade, training type, and with or without working experience have no significant effect on the different disciplines doctoral education quality satisfaction. But the level of their master’s graduate school has interaction effect for different disciplines students’ satisfaction.In order to raise the education quality satisfaction of Nanjing University and provide referential suggestions for other same type research universities, the solutions and suggestions based on the survey results of different disciplines are offered as follow:(1) To improve the situation of Science Department tutor guidance. And execute strict selection mechanism, eliminating unqualified tutors.(2) To increase Medicine’s research fund and perfect the conditions for study and research based on the characteristics of major.(3)To pay attention to the requirements for academic support of the Humanities and Social Sciences doctoral students, to provide academic support, for example, more financial support and academic communication resources and channels.(4) To increase doctoral students’financial assistance and diversify the funding source.(5) To Perfect the doctoral education system, institutionalizing and normalizing the training and administrating institution.
