With the development of modern pedagogical theory, teaching emphasis has shifted from pure knowledge subject to thinking ability training, developing unique thinking ability of students in teaching is more important to students’ ability to find and solve problems alone. Geographical thinking ability integrated the geography and the general mind of people formed by the combination of the unique way of thinking. It is a student studying geography and deepening the base of accomplishment. New geographical curriculum criteria make it clear that shall focus on training students’ thinking ability in the teaching, to improve students’ proficiency in geographic thinking ability to analysis and solve problems, so using all the favorable conditions for developing students’ thinking ability is very important in teaching. GIS as combines product of modern computer and geographic science, it has more function of geographic information visual, space analysis, thematic figure and information query. It can visually react geographic information of geographic elements, integrated analysis geographic elements space distribution and space structure. It can contact geographic elements to analysis nature traits of geographic things development. It has unique advantage in training student’s geographic thinking capacity aspects. So, it is necessary to explore the use of GIS technology to cultivate students’ thinking ability in teaching.The main contents of the paper consists of five areas: issues, research training base, related concepts, the advantage of training geographical thinking ability with GIS, design and teaching cases of thinking abilities, questions and suggestions. Firstly, GIS writing is to through reading about the training of thinking ability in the teaching of literature, and made GIS study subjects developing geographical thinking, and analysis the necessity of developing geographical thinking ability in teaching. Followed through on the study of cognitive psychology research and practice summary thesis based on theoretical foundation is guided by constructivist learning theories, practices containing the actual teaching situation and so on. Once again, combined with GIS application in the teaching of the main geographic information visualization, spatial analysis and thematic mapping functions, the writer summed up the advantages of applying GIS to teach and cultivate students’ thinking ability. Fourth, combines GIS teaching characteristic analysis of GIS applied in classroom teaching of general teaching mode as inquiry teaching mode in problem situations as the main line. Using GIS teaching combine with classroom activity in specific cases to verify GIS in cultivating students’ dialectical thinking ability, spatial thinking and thinking in images. Finally, GIS applied to teachers teaching have many issues in cultivating students’ thinking ability, teachers’ teaching idea, map data and teaching software, and give suggestions.
