With the continuous development of quality education, the requirements on studentsthinking ability have become higher and higher. The thinking ability should be developed inmany ways. As for the geography education, the Ordinary High School Geography CurriculumStandards, which was published by the Ministry of Education in2003, has put forward the ideasof cultivating necessary geographic literacy for citizens in the future, designing the high schoolgeography curriculum with temporal spirit and foundation, providing necessary geographicalknowledge for citizens in the future, improving students ability of learning geography andsurvival and learning geography useful for lifelong development. What is more, it requires thatGeography curriculum should guide students to learn how to learn and develop studentsgeography ability as well. However, it is a common phenomenon of pursuing the higherenrollment rate and ignoring students development of thinking capacity in current schooleducation. Teachers lack the awareness of developing students thinking ability and fail to meetthe students needs of intellectual curiosity and thinking ability, which has impeded thestudents development of imagery and abstract thinking ability. Graphics is an integral part ofgeography and an important tool for learning geography. Graphic teaching is able to show theboring text information in a simple and intuitive way. On the one hand, the graphic teaching canhelp students understand geography better. On the other hand, it can reduce the burden ofmemory work in learning process. And Geography itself is abstract on time and vivid on space, moreover, it has the advantage of cultivating students thinking ability by helping themunderstand and master the knowledge in textbook with graphs. In addition, the development ofsecondary school students thinking ability has laid a foundation for their study of geographicalknowledge. Hence, there is practical significance in developing students thinking ability bymean of geographic graphs in this paper.Based on the theories of Pedagogy, Psychology and Geography curriculum education, thisthesis is a case study on designing graphic teaching according to the knowledge of the textbook. The feasibility and implementation effect of the study is also conducted and the final conclusioncan be listed as follows: Firstly, the use of graphics teaching helps to improve the learning efficiency andenthusiasm of students. And it exerts a subtle impact on training students imagery and abstractthinking and promoting the development of their geographical thinking ability.Secondly, teachers play a leading role in graphics teaching. They should have a deepunderstanding of the importance of graphics teaching and often get their geographical thinkingability trained. Besides, teachers should pay attention to collecting materials in graphicsteaching and be well prepared to cultivate students geographical thinking ability.
