Investigation On The Agricultural History Of Lingnan University(1908-1952)

Chinese traditional agriculture was almost collapsed in the late Qing dynasty. Under such circumstance, the Chinese people with strong willpower actively called for necessary actions to save national agriculture, attempting to improve such terrible situation. meanwhile, the western missionaries were aware of agricultural will help their missionary work in China, those western missionaries believed that higher agricultural education will cultivate agricultural leading figures, and then put the seeds of the Christian faith into the farmer’s heart, and to achieve the goal of spreading the glory of god in China. Lingnan agricultural university is founded by western missionaries on such purpose. On this basis, the Chinese leading south China agricultural university founded in 1922 has taken over of Lingnan university in 1927, which reflected the Chinese think of the Chinese agriculture development.This article will be supported by a lot of technical literature, present the Lingnan university agricultural characteristic of the creation, development, in 1908 the missionaries Groff founded the agricultural university in 1922; in 1927 Lingnan university was nationalized.after the destruction of the Anti-Japanese War, this university was reopened in 1949; in 1952 colleges reformed and turned agronomy institution into the south China agricultural university. Reflected Chinese intellectuals hard work during such period. Discussed its contribution on Chinese agricultural modernization in three aspects, firstly, it cultivated agricultural professionals for the development of China’s modern agriculture, secondly, taking advantage of south China agriculture resources carried out agricultural scientific research innovation in south China, thirdly, by writing agricultural monographs, agriculture agricultural investigation, to enhance the spread of agriculture knowledge such as an agricultural science and technology communication and promotion; analyzing what actions the lingnan agricultural university has taken to improve rural social conditions, and the reason of why the agricultural improvement fail after so many experiments and hard word. Through discussing successful experiences and failure in education, scientific research, promotion of Chinese contemporary agriculture in the last half century explore how to improve the Lingnan agricultural university scientific research and educational standards.
