Pan Guangdan is a famous scholar in the early years of the new nation. In his lifetime, he had wrote a lot of essays, which are connected to many subjects like eugenics, sociology, education, psychology of sex, genealogy and so on. He had made a significant contribution to the development of the academic world. Among all of the great achievements, the most are about population, the quality of the population, the quality of our nation and so on. This may have some connection with his learning experience in USA, and also the social background he lives in. In his thought, if we want to solve the problem of powers invaded, we must attach importance to the quality of the population. There is two parts of Mr Pan’s thought of the population. The first part is Eugenic, also the gene. As we all know, gene is the internal cause of the genetic. In the early period of Mr. Pan’s academic career, gene is his main subject. He thought that if we want to improve the quality of our nation, we must improve our gene first, because gene is the decisive factor. In case that we have made sure that the gene we pass to our children is good, they could have the chance to grow well. Of course, except the gene, the environment is a very important factor, too. There is an important relationship between the environment and the quality of population. Pan Guangdan called this relationship between population and environment "the thought of weiyu". He believed that only we found the Equilibrium point between the population and the environment, could we realize the harmonious of the development. The environment include many terms, just like the environment which a man stay in, the social background, the education background, the family background which we live in. The second part of the Eugenic is how to handle the relationship of the population and the environment. There’s no doubt that people can change the environment, but at the same time, we should remember that the environment can influence us, too. Especially the social background, Mr. Pan lived in the start of 20 century. At that time, the Anti-Japanese War broke out, many Chinese people looked forward to find a feasible plan to save our nation. Some of them suggest to reform, others suggest to learn from the western. There’s one point that they all ignore is, no matter which road should we go, we need talent. Only when we have enough people who can led our nation go out the dangerous situation, we could have the chance to become richer and stronger. In this article, I will illuminate Pan Guangdan’s thought of population, include the Eugenics, the thought of weiyu, hope to make some contribution to the study of Pan’s thought.
