Under the circumstance of quality education and increase of college enrollment, the recruitment percentage of high school art graduates has been growing year by year. It not only provides art major with fresh blood, but also brings new challenges to the education of art students in universities and colleges. Given that more and more art freshmen come from high schools, their professional ability directly influences how well professional teaching can be carried out. Therefore, this essay conducts its survey starting with the professional basics of art freshmen. By means of classroom observation, doing interviews with teachers and collecting questionnaires, I strive to get the real picture of art freshmen’s professional basics, in order to identify problems existing in the high school education of art students. Taking advantage of the opportunity to visit high schools, I explore the root causes of such problems and put forward some constructive suggestions on how to improve the education of art students in high school. This study is divided into the following four parts:Part One: Studies on the status quo of art freshmen’s professional basics —taking Beijing Normal University, Zhuhai Campus as an example. By means of classroom observation, doing interviews with teachers and distributing questionnaires to art freshmen of 2014, I grasp the real situation of art freshmen’s professional basics and then point out existing problems. I also analyze the root causes of such problems and identify potential problems in the education of high school art students.Part Two: Studies on the status quo of education of art students in high schools—taking high schools in Zhuhai for instance. Through acquainting myself with the basic facts of high schools in Zhuhai, I realize that the teaching orientations and objectives for art students are not alike among different types of high schools. Since art students graduated from ordinary high schools are the main sources for universities and colleges, the research then focuses on the current educational situation in ordinary high schools in Zhuhai.Part Three: Identifying the existing problems in the high school education of art students and analyzing their root causes—taking ordinary high schools in Zhuhai for instance. 1. The educational objectives for art students in ordinary high schools are utilitarian. 2. The professional curriculum systems for the education of art students are incomplete in ordinary high schools in Zhuhai. 3. The educational conditions of ordinary high schools in Zhuhai need further improvement. 4. Ordinary high schools in Zhuhai are lacking in management of students’ self-study.Part Four: Suggestions on how to improve high school education of art students. 1. To establish a correct concept of training high school art students. 2. To devise a curriculum system for training high school art students. 3. To develop a mode of self-management and self-study for high school art students. 4. To build platforms for communication and cooperation with artistic institutions of higher education.The education of high school art students has become the main focus of displaying characteristics of high school education and promoting all-round quality education. It is also an important part in the long-term programming of high school education. Therefore, we should improve the current educational situation of art students, enhance the overall educational quality of art students in high schools and aim for the long-term development of students. Only if these conditions are fulfilled can we succeed in selecting and reserving outstanding artistic talents for institutions of higher education, as well as for our country.
