When the freshmen first entered the college, they experienced great changes in their learning style and living environment, which could usually cause mental maladjustment. If they failed to deal with this maladjustment in time, the maladjustment would have a negative impact on both their upcoming college life and their work and life after graduation. This study is an applied research concerning freshmen’s adaptability, in which we tested the freshmen entered the college in about two months using "College Student Adaptability Inventory" developed by Lu Xiefeng in 2003 and then for the freshmen who were troubled by the maladjustment we developed a group intervention program on the basis of cognitive behavior therapy. Thus, the study can be divided into two sub-studies: The sub-study I:With the aforementioned inventory, we conducted a survey with 438 freshmen from Hubei University of Technology in November of 2015. Based on the survey, we can quantify the level of freshmen’s adaptability. Afterwards, we can figure out the discrepancies between different dimensions and demographic variables. The sub-study II:We picked out the freshmen who showed maladjustment in accordance with the score they got in the survey. Thereafter, we had an interview with them to determine the experimental subjects as well as the most significant factor that caused their maladjustment. The subjects were divided into observation group and control group randomly. Subsequently, we had the observation group to participate in the group counseling, while the control group without any intervention. Finally, we can get to know the effect of group intervention on the adaptability of the freshmen by comparing the results of pretest、posttest also tracking test of both the observation group and the control group. The conclusion of the study can be concluded as follow:a. There are gender differences in the total score of adaptability inventory. More specifically, boy students receive a higher score than girl students.b. Whether single child or not doesn’t affect the total score of adaptability inventory. While, the only child scores higher in "Interpersonal Adaptability" as well as "Self-Adaptability" and the student with siblings performs better in "Livelihood Self-Management Adaptability".c. The total score of adaptability inventory doesn’t vary with major.d. Students from different regions almost receive the same score in the total score of adaptability inventory. Nevertheless,it is not the case when it comes to the following factors:"Interpersonal Adaptability"."Self-Adaptability","Livelihood Self-Management Adaptability". On the one hand students form the city perform better in "Interpersonal Adaptability" and "Self-Adaptability", but on the other hand they perform poorer in "Livelihood Self-Management Adaptability".e. The positive influence of group intervention on the adaptability of the freshmen has the characteristics of immediacy also it can last for a long time. Therefore, group intervention based on cognitive behavior can help improve the adaptability of the freshmen effectively.
