China is attaching more importance to the development of vocational education as the gradual structural transformation of the economy continues. By focusing on the relationship among regional economy, personnel recruitment of enterprises and the operation of vocational schools in Changsha National Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone(hereafter referred to as Changsha Hi-Tech Zone), this article conducts research on the development of the industries inside, the enterprises’ needs for talents, and how these vocational schools operate and what their problems are, in a bid to offer suggestions for boosting growth and improving vocational education in this zone.This article aims to research on the current situation of vocational education in this area, its problems and possible solutions by analyzing how vocational schools are run in Changsha Hi-Tech Zone. First, five secondary vocational schools and vocational colleges including Changsha Vocational & Technical College are selected as the main subjects of study with consideration given to enterprises. Personnel data of enterprises in this zone are pooled and information about the current operation of the schools is gathered for the final analysis through questionnaires, interviews and field trips. Second, problems existing in the operation of the schools are discussed by analyzing the study results, most of which are related to the size and quality of school education, curriculums and talent cultivation programs. Last, corresponding suggestions are made to help the schools move forward, which include prioritizing education quality, establishing market-oriented characteristic majors based on the economic trends in the zone, and creating talent cultivation programs compatible with the needs of the industrial clusters inside.
