Inquiry-based Teaching is a teaching method that the New Curriculum Criteria(2001) proposes, it has been applied by many educational experts, scholars and the front line teachers and has got great improvement in its theory and practice aspect. However, the practical results of Inquiry-based Teaching do not satisfy all people. This study is conducted by investigating senior high school English class of rural area and observing the implementation situation of Inquiry-based Teaching, which may hopefully enrich and deepen the understanding of Inquiry-based Teaching and know about how it can solve the English grammar teaching problems.In this study, two art classes from a representative senior high school of Yushe County in Shanxi Province were chosen as the research subjects, the two classes are Class 273 and Class 274, Class 273 is taught with the traditional method while Class 274 is taught with Inquiry-based Teaching method. The experiment lasts 4 months, hoping the study result obtained from this two classes’ inquiry-based teaching can provide some valuable reference for the senior high school English teaching.In this thesis, two questions are researched. The first one is : is it effective to apply Inquiry-based Teaching to senior high school English grammar class? The second question is how to implement this method?The author analyze the implementation situation of Inquiry-based Teaching in Class 274 and the comparison result between Class 273 and Class 274 before the test and after the test through observing the students’ performance after implementing the method, the pretest and post-test, questionnaire and random interview to English teachers.After careful analysis, two conclusions are made here: the implementation result of Inquiry-based Teaching method in Class 274 is good, which means that Inquiry-based Teaching method is effective when applied to senior high school English grammar class; this method can be carried out not only in class but also after class, the teacher can combine the in-class teaching and after-class teaching perfectly through the homework that she assigned elaborately.
