Because of the heavy study burden, emphasis on learning materials, and ineffective learning experience, many high school students gradually lose their interest and self-consciousness in learning English, which directly results in the failure of learning English. So it is important to find effective ways to cultivate students’interest in learning English and develop their English skills. The extra-curricular English activity in high school provides English teachers with an effective and free platform to help their students improve their English abilities. And Charlotte s Web is just the excellent work that can be used in the extra-curricular English activity. In the extra-curricular English activity, the English teachers can freely make their lesson plans, develop students’ self-learning abilities, give students’more opportunities to practice, and develop students’moral values. This study focuses on the measures to improve high school students’English skills by making use of Charlotte s Web in the extra-curricular English activity and the suggestions about how to carry out efficient and meaningful extra-curricular English activity.There are three research questions in this study:(1) Why is Charlotte s Web suitable for the extra-curricular English activity in high school?(2) How to make use of Charlotte s Web to improve students’English?(3) How to make use of the extra-curricular English activity to improve students’ English?The subjects of this survey are100high school students from the eighteenth high school in Baotou,45grade one students in senior high school and55grade two students in junior high school. This survey takes questionnaire as the main investigating tool. The experiment includes pre-test and post-test. By comparing and analyzing the results of these two tests, the author reaches the conclusion.There are altogether eight chapters in this thesis. Chapter one is the brief introduction to the current implementation of the extra-curricular English activity in high school. In chapter two, the author illustrates the positive influence of Charlotte s Web on high school students’English learning from different perspectives, like language, moral and so on. Chapter three is about the theoretical basis which includes Constructivism, multiple Intelligences and whole language approach. Chapter four is methodology in which the author introduces research objectives, research subjects, research tools and methods. The author mainly analyzes the data and reaches the conclusion. Chapter five illustrates why Charlotte’s Web can improve students’ vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing skills and puts forwards some suggestions about how to improve these skills by making use of Charlotte s Web. Chapter six is a sample of lesson plan about Charlotte s Web in the extra-curricular English activity. In chapter seven, the author puts forward suggestions and solutions for the extra-curricular English activity in high school. Chapter eight is conclusion in which the author also mentions some limitations of this thesis and some suggestions for further study.
