The particularity of school education in regions inhabited by ethnic groups mainly demonstrates in three aspects, among which weak school education basis stands first, which features poor infrastructure, inadequate and less qualified teachers, dropout and poor academic achievements of students. In addition, compared with schools of Han, those of ethnic groups have to take up the mission of inheriting their ethnic culture. Besides, they also have to shoulder the political mission of making students of ethnic groups realize ethnic and national identity. White pants Yao inhabiting in Yao Mountain is typical in school education in ethnic group regions owing to its special geographic location and traditional culture that is comparatively well preserved.Based on value orientation of school education, the thesis tries to analyze the status of school education of white pants Yao in Yao Mountain and existing problems it faces, and provides macro-ideas to solve the problems. Referring to research methods, the author does not adopt those speculative ones commonly used in discussing value orientation of education, but based on status of education of ethnic group schools, respectively analyzes dynamic factors affecting localization and modernization, and probes into favorable and adverse interaction of those two different value orientations of education. In favorable interaction, school education integrates with ethnic traditional culture during the process of social change and cultural transformation, which enhances and enriches ethnic culture, while adverse interaction is mainly displayed in quality of school education where dropout still remains, academic achievements are barely satisfactory and employment issues are getting highlighted. And then the thesis analyzes the main causes of adverse interaction from the perspective of school and students. Institutionalized school education focuses on passing on mainstream culture, putting aside ethnic culture inheritance, but boarding of students in lower ages gives increased responsibility to the school, depriving home and community education of time and space to transmit ethnic culture. As for the students, they need to adjust to both school and family life, and have a strong sense of ethnic inferiority. At last, the thesis puts forwards that adaptation principle of value orientation of school education is putting people first and education, and adaptation method is making a clear distinction for inheriting ethnic culture of school education and enhancing self-awareness of ethnic culture of the teachers.In this study, the author believes school education in ethnic group regions is not supposed to hold the mode of thinking in binary opposition involving localization and modernization but deal dialectically with their relation. School education should bear certain responsibility of inheriting ethnic culture while give full play to school and home education in ethnic culture inheritance. Besides, modes and approaches are supposed to be put emphasis on, and traditional culture should integrate with the process of modernization, and students are expected to establish a sense of ethnic pride and ethnic identity. Passing mainstream knowledge remains to be primary task of school education, and focusing on improving education quality is still an essential issue to be solved in today’s school education in ethnic group schools.
