Players and coaches of four patterns are analyzed from different aspects. In addition, the training years, levels, talents choosing, academic studying, equipments, funds and insurances are analyzed. It is expected that we can find the elements that influence the development of back up players and provide countermeasures for the existing problems so as to provide theoretical evidences for the sustainable development of competitive volleyball development in Shanghai. Following conclusions are drawn from the research.1.There are four main patterns in the Shanghai volleyball player development:sports school, club, traditional and sports and education in one., all the four patterns are co-existing.2.The age of the players is co-related with their training years. And thus they are more likely to achieve high scores in competitions.Players in sports schools pay more attention to the cultivation of skills and pays less attention to academic achievement. Other 3 patterns, however, pay attention to the equal development of studying and training.3.The coaches of Shanghai volleyball teams have rich experiences, most of them have been coached of teams of city level. Coaches in sports schools have high skills, which is an advantage for improving the scores of volleyball players, but they have relatively low degree of education. The coaches in the other three patterns are mostly middle-aged, lacking the participation of younger coaches and thus causes the age gap-4.The elements that influence the cultivation of back up players is that there are not enough candidates, parents are not supporting enough, coaches lack professional knowledge, invariability of fund sources, etc.
