The middle school phase is an important period of cultivating students’ interest in learning English and of improving English comprehensive ability. As one of the common means used in middle school English classroom, role-play activity embraces various teaching content and the diversity of role-play situation, which can effectively attract students’ interests and enable them to participate actively in the activities and improve their overall English competence. Meanwhile, numerous studies have shown that role play is a kind of teaching activity which doesn’t conform to the traditional teaching mode; it can not only trigger students’ interests and greatly improved students’ enthusiasm to learn English, but also cultivate their social role awareness and language communicative competence. In addition, students’ innovation spirit and practical ability will be fostered when they participate in the activity. However, a lot of teachers have some problems in successfully implementing the role-play and fail to maximize the effect of role-play. What’s more, some students began to dislike role-play activity because of the improper organization by the teacher, which will have a negative impact on students’ English learning.The present thesis first introduces research background and significance. And then, it deals with the theoretical foundations on which the research is based and relevant researches on role-play home and abroad. Besides, the thesis will have a detailed study of problems in implementing role-play activity and have a deep analysis of those problems with the means of interview and case study. In addition, some suggested strategies will be presented and be tested by questionnaire. Finally, the major findings and pedagogic implications are described. Meanwhile, the limitations of present study are pointed out and some suggestions for further study are made by the author.
