China is a country of poetry, from "The Book of Songs," "Songs of the South" to the prosperity of poetry in Tang and Song Dynasty. Poetry carries many of our emotions and sustenance. Its development has undergone a tremendous change in the past century and many outstanding poets of poetry have emerged from the revolution. Modern poetry reading and appreciation are of vital importance in high school language teaching. They are indispensable part of Chinses study for Senoir High students. Modern poetry can do a good job by teaching students the aesthetic qualities and poetic wisdom, which can encourage students to discover and experience the beauty that can purify the minds of students, promoting students humanistic spirit and self-improvement.But in actual teaching, the teaching of modern poetry is faced with many problems. Lack of modern poetry-related knowledge, students’ low reading ability, and the one-teacher teaching method all contribute to the poor performance in modern poetry learning. The problems that teachers face indicate a lack of modern poetry teaching thinking and research, which calls for all teachers to pay attention to. As a front-line teacher, it is important and necessary to teach modern poetry, because it is not an optional course, but a course related to the construction of students’ aesthetic world.In this paper, the status quo of teaching modern poetry and problems are presented, which may help explore strategies to improve the teaching of modern poetry. The paper consists of four parts: the first part is an introduction, including issues raised, the purpose and significance of the study, research status and contents; the second part is the importance of teaching modern poetry in High School, including the characteristics and significance of modern poetry teaching and an interpretation of New Curriculum to the relevant requirements of modern poetry teaching; the third part is the current situation and problems of modern poetry in high school teaching, mainly concerning problems from students. The teacher describes two aspects of modern poetry inadequate teaching; and the fourth part is to explore strategies to improve the teaching of modern poetry in high school, with its mainly purpose to explore the theme of teaching and single unit of teaching by two means. Hope that through the analysis of the problems of modern poetry interpretation can explore improved methods of teaching modern poetry in order to respond to the call of teaching poetry as well as the construction of a poetic classroom.
