Correlational Study Of Senior High School Students’ Personality And Their English Reading Scores

English reading plays an important role in the teaching of senior high school English course. However, teachers often ignore students’ individual differences in learning reading. New curriculum requires that teaching should meet with the students’ need, and teachers should pay attention to the individual differences and different learning characteristics of students. So, the correlation between learning of reading and the students’ individual differences should also be taken into consideration by teachers. And Curry finds that personality substantially controls one’s learning behavior. Thus it can be seen that, knowing the personality of different students can help teachers to better predict the students’ learning behavior of reading. And based on this, teachers can better help students of different personality to improve their reading scores.This study is based on the MBTI personality type theory, and it is carried out with 333 students from grade one of Fuzhou pingdong middle school as subjects. And the English reading scores are collected by reading scores examined in different periods. This study tries to investigate the relationship between senior high school students’ personality which is based on the MBTI personality type theory and their English reading scores. Spss statistical software is used to analyze the distribution of the 333 students’ personality and the English reading scores of the students of the 16 different personalities and of the two opposing personality tendencies in the four dimensions, trying to investigate if there is a significant difference between the students of the 16 different personalities and the two opposing personality tendencies in the four dimensions. Findings are that: 1. Senior high school students’ personalities are unevenly distributed. Extraversion Intution Feeling Perception(ENFP) personality, Introversion Intution Feeling Perception(INFP) personality and Extraversion Sensing Feeling Perception(ESFP) personality are in the majority, accounted for 16.8%, 13.5% and 13.5% of the total respectively, all accounted for 43.8% of the total. Introversion Sensing Thinking Judgement(ISTJ) personality, Introversion Sensing Thinking Perception(ISTP) personality and Extraversion Intution Thinking Judgement(ENTJ) personality are in the minority, accounted for 1.5%, 1.8% and 2.4% of the total respectively, all accounted for 5.7% of the total. On the four dimensions, Extraversion(E), Intution(N), Feeling(F) and Perception(P) are in the majority, accounted for 59.2%, 59.5%, 64.9% and 68.8% of the total respectively. And Introversion(I), Sensing(S), Thinking(T), and Judgement(J) are in the minority, accounted for 40.8%, 40.5%, 35.1% and 31.2% of the total respectively. 2. There are six groups of different personalities exist significant difference between personality and their reading scores. The analysis shows that Extraversion Intution Thinking Judgement(ENTJ) personality significantly outscored Extraversion Sensing Feeling Perception(ESFP) personality, Extraversion Intution Thinking Judgement(ENTJ) personality significantly outscored Extraversion Intution Feeling Judgement(ENFJ) personality, and Extraversion Intution Thinking Judgement(ENTJ) personality significantly outscored Extraversion Intution Feeling Perception(ENFP) personality, Introversion Sensing Feeling Judgement(ISFJ) personality significantly outscored Extraversion Sensing Feeling Perception(ESFP) personality, Introversion Sensing Feeling Judgement(ISFJ) personality significantly outscored Extraversion Intution Feeling Judgement(ENFJ) personality, and Introversion Sensing Feeling Judgement(ISFJ) personality significantly outscored Extraversion Intution Feeling Perception(ENFP) personality. That is Extraversion Intution Thinking Judgement(ENTJ) personality and Introversion Sensing Feeling Judgement(ISFJ) personality significantly outscored Extraversion Sensing Feeling Perception(ESFP) personality, Extraversion Intution Feeling Judgement(ENFJ) personality and Extraversion Intution Feeling Perception(ENFP) personality. 3. There isn’t any significant difference between the two opposing personality tendencies in the four dimensions and their reading scores.Based on the above result of analysis, some proposals are put forward for the(ESFP) personality,(ENFJ) personality, and(ENFP) personality who have significantly lower reading scores, and the advice is also suggested according to the features of the different tendencies of the four dimensions.This study aims to examine the connection between the personality type of students and their reading scores to provide theoretical basis and practical guidance for individualized education. And it’s hoped that this study can help teachers to teach English reading in accordance with the students’ aptitude.
