Research On Integration Of Campus Culture Of China’s Universities Under Multi-campuses Model

In the 1990 s, the government carried out a policy of “co-building, adjustment, cooperation, merger” on higher education. Thence, Yangzhou University initiated the action of merger and reorganization of campuses, leading to the establishment of a multi-campuses management pattern. Moreover, the implement of expansion of universities policy in 1999 stimulated a surge of multicampuses universities immediately as universities merged with each other or built campuses to meet the needs of expansion. It’ s proper to say that multi-campuses management pattern is the result of Chinese higher education reform, as well as the practical need of mass higher education. Yet, the merger and expansion craze of universities has already cooled, though the influences of it are just witnessed, as the enrollments of universities dropped in 2010.Nowadays, many universities have unified management on the whole, while there is still a long way to go for substantive merger, and achieving the goal of “One University”. As for the realization of substantive merger, the integration of campus culture is crucial because a really highlevel university must be one with profound culture and long history. As it is known that the shape of campus culture requires a long period of time, merger of universities, too, is bound to be timeconsuming.This paper made a thorough introduction about the contents, structures, and influences of campus culture, along with the backgrounds, types, and features of multi-campuses universities referring to relevant books, theses, dissertations and journals. It also analyzed the influences of merger of campus culture, and the current situation existing in the merger of campus culture considering the advantages and impediments in the process of merger. This paper outlined the progress of culture merger according to the practice of merger of campus culture, put forward two basic principles-adhering to the co-existence of generalization and diversity, combination of transmission and innovation, and analyzed the strategies employed by universities in culture merger from the perspectives of material culture, system culture and spiritual culture.
