Literacy teaching is the foundation of Chinese Teaching in the first period of primary school, which is directly related to students’ development of comprehensive qualities, such as reading, writing, oral communication etc. The teaching method of repetition of reading and writing makes students know merely the combination of strokes instead of the background knowledge of characters. Literacy teaching by principles of character formation (LTPCF) with technical support in the first period of primary school is a literacy teaching method based on the formation and evolution of Chinese characters, starting from the relationships among form, meaning and pronunciation of the characters. It combines students’learning with teachers’ instruction, aiming at representing abstract stroke symbols as dynamic mental images to overcome the difficulty of character formation. It improves the efficiency of literacy teaching as well as students’ accomplishment in Chinese character.This paper reviews relevant theories about LTPCF and LTPCF with technical support, and investigates current situation of LTPCF in Yulin Gaoxin No.1 primary school. It also reclassifies the Chinese characters in the first period of primary school, selecting the particular technical means and the ways of presentation in search of the basic access to LTPCF with technical support. Taking a lesson of look at the sky from the bottom of a well for example, which is selected from the second grade course book for primary school published by People’s Education Press, the author does concrete action research, manages to apply the result of LTPCF with technical support into practice.The paper consists of six chapters:Chapter 1 illustrates the research background, research aims and significance, research review, research content and method, and technical route.Chapter 2 reviews the concepts, strengths and basic principles of LTPCF and multimedia teaching by literature research, and sorts out the theoretical foundation of LTPCF with technical support.In Chapter 3, according to the result of questionnaire on all the Chinese teachers in Yulin Gaoxin No.1 primary school, the author analyzes the current status of the school by frequency and efficiency of LTPCF with multimedia, and support of textbook and school. The feasibility of LTPCF with multimedia is analyzed through facilities, teaching staff and student source of the school. In addition, comments on four aspects including analysis on principles of character formation, teachers’ training, teaching system and platform construction of multimedia teaching in the school’s practice of LTPCF with multimedia are given.Chapter 4 reclassifies the Chinese characters in the first period of primary school in the light of six principles of character formation and attribute of Chinese characters, selects which instruments and software to be used in LTPCF, gives examples of teaching four types of Chinese characters with multimedia. The basic model of LTPCF with technical support is explored through the teaching design of look at the sky from the bottom of a well.In Chapter 5, applying action research method, the author improves and modifies the teaching design through three cycles of teaching practice and evaluation of LTPCF, during which three classes of second grade of the school are chosen to take the lesson of look at the sky from the bottom of a well.Chapter 6 draws conclusions from the research results, and puts forward the prospect of future research on this topic.The following conclusions can be drawn from this research:First, LTPCF with technical support in the first period of primary school takes the period and Chinese literacy accomplishment into consideration, which is a new approach to integrating Information technology with Chinese teaching.Second, after analyzing the current status and feasibility of LTPCF with multimedia in the first period of Yulin Gaoxin No.1 Primary School, the results are good, more attention on four aspects of strengthening the scientific analysis of principles of character formation (PCF), improving teachers’ comprehension of PCF, perfecting the teaching system of LTPCF and carrying out online and offline multimedia teaching platform should be paid.Third, after classify the characters in the first period by the six principles of character formation and their attribute and selecting appropriate technical means, the general model of LTPCF with technical support is explored through the actual examples of LTPCF with multimedia and the specific teaching designIn the procedure of teaching design, the principal roles of teachers, multimedia and students are emphasized. The teacher’s activities as the principal role consist of four processes, that is, revealing the title and presenting the aims, appreciating the animation and perceiving the full text, reading the dialogues and learning the characters in the text, and testing through exercises and deepening the comprehension.Fourth, in the light of the basic model of LTPCF with technical support, after three cycles of action research of the lesson of look at the sky from the bottom of a well, the basic model is modified by the practice and evaluation of original one, in which teacher’s activities as the principal role expand to seven processes including preview before class, revealing the title and presenting the aims, demonstration with multimedia and learning the characters intensively, appreciating the animation and perceiving the full text, reading the dialogues and perceiving deeply, testing through exercises and deepening the comprehension, and review after class.Fifth, LTPCF with technical support improves the efficiency of literacy teaching, and arouses students’ interest in learning characters, which provides strong support for students’ Chinese literacy accomplishment.
