Statistical Analysis Of Index System Of Chinese And American University Rankings

After the world’s first universities ranking(UR) was published in America in 1983, many countries(such as Britain, German, Japan, Canada etc.) also released their URs, which now become world popular trend.Since China pressed the first UR in 1987, the number of companies and organizations which involved in the UR has been gradually increased, so has the number of the UR lists. So far, there have been more than 30 kinds of lists released by more than 20 companies and organizations in China. Besides, in order to stimulate domestic demand and consumption, promote economic growth and to alleviate employment pressure, the Chinese government has been carried on the college expansion policy since 1999. As a result, the number of Chinese colleges has been larger and larger and the higher education has become the public education. As the higher education assessment has been fully expanded since 2003, the UR which is the important part of it has got great attention from the education organization and the public. Due to the reasons above, we choose the URs as a study subject.We know that America is the original country for UR and US News and World Report is the first organization to release the first UR, which now has great influence in choosing colleges for American students and Chinese overseas students. In China, the most popular URs come from many organizations including Net-big and Chinese Universities Alumni Association. In this paper, we decided these two and US News and World Report UR as a comparison.The histories of Chinese and American URs are briefly introduced in this paper. We emphasize the UR history and current situation of Net-big, Alumni Association and US News and World Report.We mainly focus on study of the evaluation index system of the URs and statistically analyze the changes of URs respectively during fixed period to find out the core and important index. Then we make comparison of these index systems. We not only analyze their common index, but also compare their core index and important index in order to know the qualities of these three URs.
