With the advent of the information society, people’s reading has been quietly changing. The method of most of us to get information from readings has been changed from the pure text reading into a comprehensive reading which is text combined with pictures. It indicate that the ability to interpret the images will become the basic ability for each citizen with the time of pictures reading coming.Nowadays, the main form of students to accept education is classroom teaching, whose main way of developing the ability to interpret the images relies mainly on the textbook illustrations. Followed by the pace of information, chemistry teaching material of middle school enriched a lot with educational reform, which added many featured illustrations, including physical pictures (including chemical experimental instrument for physical pictures), simulation principle diagram in micro situation, schematic pictures, experimental phenomena pictures, chemical production pictures and etc. Bright subject characteristic illustrations is enriching with the textbook revision, and this provides very important teaching resources to middle school chemistry teaching, and also reflects a fact that the subject characteristics of chemistry determines that the chemical teaching cannot do without illustrations. However, in the long term of examination-oriented education, many teachers and students are using the "fast food" teaching, some teachers don’t use textbook illustrations, even without the use of textbooks, and students just blindly accept the teachers "indirect experience" to get a high score, therefore, students simply do not experience to the process and method of achieving knowledge, and this method against the concept of "experiential learning" in the new curriculum reform. The reform of basic education curriculum is the direct result of not fully used.Therefore, in order to improve the effectiveness of middle school chemistry teaching and get the goal of knowledge and skills, we must implement the teaching process and teaching method, take good emotional attitude and values objectives, study on current situation of the use of textbook illustrations, and put forward the optimization strategy. And these methods have substantial significance to the cultivation of students’ability to interpret the images.This thesis includes five large parts. The first part is the introduction which is elaborated the selected topic reason and the significance, goal, content and method of the research. The second part is the theoretical basis which includes the summary of domestic and foreign textbook illustrations; related concepts of this study; characteristics, classification and function of high school chemistry textbook illustrations of Person-teaches version; classification of ability to interpret the images classification (reference on person teaching edition); the theory of educational psychology. The third part is the investigation and analysis which includes analysis of the questionnaire survey of teachers and students and analysis of interviews. From this investigation and analysis, we can know the current situation of the use of PEP high school chemistry textbook and come to conclusion. The fourth part puts forward some suggestions to optimize the use of textbook illustrations according to the conclusion of the investigation, the teaching level, development of students’ability to interpret the images, textbook compilation. The fifth part is the summary and prospect of this research.
