As a psychologist at the university of Hong Kong education, Biggs puts forward his own thought and theory----the SOLO theory during his study on the basis of the deficiencies of Paget’s cognitive development theory. The theory is aimed at the Thinking structure which reflected from the eternal feedback of students on a particular issue for layered, divides the structure of thinking into 5 levels from low to high according to the complexity of thinking structure. The results of external feedback can be observed in class, so teachers can evaluate the students’ feedback based on the SOLO theory. Preliminarily diagnose students’ thinking level, to learn the cognitive structure on a subject. In view of the function of SOLO Theory, this paper is on the guidance of SOLO theory, combines teaching in the first Algebraic expression to carry on the following research:(1)How to accomplish the teaching design according to SOLO Theory.(2)How to implement and adjust the teaching process according to SOLO Theory.(3)What changes do the first grade junior middle school students have on cognitive level following the implementation of teaching according to SOLO Theory. The results show that:(1)The SOLO theory can guide teachers to conform teaching goals, to determine the teaching order and select the appropriate methods of exercises’ interpretation, etc. The experimental data can be learned that under the guidance of SOLO theory, the teaching design can be reach the standards of teaching result.(2) When teachers evaluate the students’ answers in class or practice tests, they can diagnose thinking level by looking at the students’ feedback on the questions according to the theory, and then adjust and improve the teaching progress and method reasonably on students’ behaviors.(3) The teaching of algebra chapter in junior school under the guide of SOLO Theory is suitable for the grade 7 students’ cognitive development, as it not only improves the students’ cognitive level but also improves the learning interest and motivation of mathematics. Moreover, the students’ mathematical thinking also be improved.(4)It changes course evaluation functionfrom focusing on identifying and selection to motivation, feedback and adjustment.Telling students’ the current level of thinking by teachers’ judgment to students’ answers, and putting forward some reasonable and relevant methods to improve the students’ thinking level. This evaluation system changes the function of the current curriculum evaluation.(5)In the process of actual research, we obtain some relevant inspiration about teachers’ teaching and students’ learning based on the SOLO theory.
