Although the concept of protecting ancient villages has alreadypenetrated into people’s heart thoroughly for a long time, the protectionwork often lapses into trouble when it enters into the practical level. Thatthis dilemma is related to its principal part, the villagers’ ignoring theidentity of residential space during the protection of ancient villages.Taking the case of Cangpo Village, Yongjia County, Wenzhou and basingon the profound field investigation, this paper studies the villager’sresidential space identity of the ancient village mainly from these threeaspects: changes of clan culture, changes of village culture, andurbanization.The whole paper is divided into five chapters:The first chapter is the introduction, mainly elaborating the topicsignificance, research review, research method, case study–the generalsituation of Cangpo village and defining the main concept “residentialspace identity" involved in the paper. The second chapter mainly discusses the influence of changes of clanculture based on blood relationship on the villager’s residential spaceidentification of the ancient village. It explores the specific circumstanceof clan culture changes’ effect on the living space identity from the twoaspects: first, function changes of Li’s ancestral temple, as a cultureexhibition space; second, the transformation from “patriarchal system” to“reverse patriarchal system”.The third chapter mainly discusses the influence of village culturechanges based on the geographical relationship on the villager’sresidential space identity of the ancient village. It supports that themodern changes of the village cultural expectations, village communityconsciousness and village spiritual belief makes the change of villagers’residential space identity.The fourth chapter places villager’s residential space identity underthe visual field of urbanization, to analyze the reality description ofresidential space identity, including the identity of both village’s historyand the modern life style. It demonstrates the influence of urbanization onvillagers’ residential space identity from the reality of Cangpo village.The fifth chapter is the epilogue, which makes further discussion onvillagers’ residential space identification of ancient villages, andemphasizes the significance of villagers’ residential space identity onprotecting ancient villages. It agrees that because of the lacking ofvillagers’ traditional residential space identity of ancient village, villagerswho should have been one of the most important protectors of the ancientvillages now become destroyers. Hope this study will provide some brandnew and effective ideas and approaches to protect the ancient villages.
