According to the new curriculum standard of senior high school, teachers should concentrate on training the students’integrative competence of applying English. It requests the students can exchange their ideas on various topics with others and present their own opinions. It clearly raises the basic goal of English learning is to develop the integrative skills of the language. One’s oral English ability shows one’s humanistic quality. With the trend of global society, English plays an important part in the global communication. So to develop the oral English ability is a must. However, in my teaching career, I have discovered that the teachers haven’t made the goal of oral English teaching clear in mind. Their ideology is still weak and their teaching methods are still old-fashioned. Because of the present university entrance examination system and a variety of subjective factors, a large number of students can get a high mark in the examination but they can hardly open their mouths to speak out a word. Obviously, varieties of problems have arisen in the oral English teaching at present, among which dumb English is the most serious one. There are such questions as a lack of guidance of the systematic theory as well as the irrationality of the period arrangement and the inefficiency and so on. Consequently, according to the requirements of the new curriculum standard, this thesis paper focus on analyzing the present situation and the major problems where the oral English teaching are lying. It also deeply explores how the teachers can make the students open their mouths to speak English. Therefore I deem teachers should fully develop the subjective initiative of the students and foster their oral communicative competence in a favorable class atmosphere. In order to do this, ought to set a reasonable communication situation and encourage them to speak, which can thus remove their anxiety. Consequently, both the teaching effect of teachers and the students’ ability of oral English communication will get enhanced.
