Moral Value Of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games On Adolescents And Its Implementation Approach

At the core of the Olympic spirit and content, education is a main thread throughoutthe Olympic movement and its essence as well. The popularity of the Olympic movementaround the world can not do without youth participation and more teens are in need fortraining future Olympians. Therefore, the International Olympic Committee has designedthis flagship action specifically for youth, which has become a new project and a creativeplatform in the Olympic development with major educational meaning. By organizing aninternational sports event specified for youth, its purpose is to spread Olympic spirit, togather all talents of youth athletes to participate in the games and exchange, to encourageand attract youth to participate in sports, and to obtain healthy life style from sports.The opening of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games is the combination of Olympic Gamesand the Chinese ancient civilization once again, which adds a new sense to the Olympicmovement, and also means that teenagers around the world once again have theopportunity in a climate of full taste of Chinese traditional culture to participate in a deeppool of Olympic education programs. It is education-oriented and moral education first.More than100years ago, after Mr. Coubertin examined the educational mode of ThomasArnold in the United Kingdom, he came to realize that sports can not only train a person’sbody, but also better a moral character, so as to reshape a youth generation, to promote thebalance of body and mind. Thus he made a firm resolve to introduce the Olympicmovement into the modern world. Now over100years later, as a milestone in the processof Olympic development, Nanjing Youth Olympic Games advocates the spirit of ‘letOlympic go into youth; let youth embrace Olympic’, a loud slogan of ‘share youth; builtfuture together’ and a mascot ‘Le Le’ to symbolize ‘opening of mountain to move forwardcourageously’. It calls and welcomes youth around the world to come to Nanjing. It holds asignificant Olympic event with the same emphasis on culture, education and sports, hencemakes Olympic spirit and Chinese virtue mutually shine. It is one of its duties and missions about how to use the opportunity of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games as to promote themoral value on young people through effective ways and to reserve valuable educationallegacy for young people in China and the world.Based on the literature review, interviews, questionnaires, statistics and logic analysisas the main research methods，the moral values and approaches of Nanjing Youth OlympicGames as the study, value philosophy, sociology, pedagogy, ethics, the essential connectionof the Olympic movement and education as the theoretical basis of the study, the followingconclusions are mainly drawn:(1) The principal object of the Youth Olympic Games is the young people, so itspurpose is to let more young people around the world to communicate and interact, thecore of which is to allow youth to receive healthy physical and mental education, so thatthe Olympic values of ‘excellence, respect and friendship’ can be more widely accepted bythe youth.(2) The moral education is not only very indispensable for the personal developmentof young people, but also vital for the national development. Olympic movement is aninvaluable resource for ideological and moral education of young people, and can be usedas an important complement for the school and family moral education on youth. NanjingYouth Olympic Games explains and complements, in its own unique way, the educationalcontent of the Olympic movement. It upholds and carries forward the Olympic movement’smoral attributes, and comes to be a new way to carry out ideological and moral educationfor young people.(3) The moral value of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games on adolescents mainlyreflects in the following aspects: to spread the Olympic spirit and nurture in youth moralqualities of fairness, solidarity, friendship, hard work and self-improvement; to adopt ahealthy lifestyle and develop young people’s moral cultivation; to develop young people ‘ssocial responsibility and social awareness; to nurture their volunteer spirit of selflessdedication; to promote the "Nanjing" spirit, and dispel the erosion of personality on thesocial pathologies and malformations.(4) The realization approaches of moral value of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games arethrough the logo of Nanjing Youth Olympic Games functioning as carrier, participating inthe volunteer service of Youth Olympic Games, developing and implementing the2014Nanjing Youth Olympic education plan of action, good examples in education, and using the universality and penetration of the mass media, and so on.
