Listening teaching is always the weak link among basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. At present, the main model of listening teaching is still teacher-centered. Teacher often asks students to follow the tape again and again and then answer some questions or do practice. This teaching method usually incline to mechanical training by doing exercises which makes students tired and bored. Furthermore, that will make students lose interest in learning English.TBLT (Task-based language teaching) is a learner-centered and ’learning by doing’ language teaching method which has been put forward from1980s. New Standard Curriculum (2001) promulgated by Ministry of Education initiates that TBLT should be advocated. It is still a obsessional issue, especially for new English teachers, about how to use TBLT in listening class effectively. So the author tries to combine the theory of task-based language teaching with real listening class. According to Willis’model, the author designed a task-based teaching plan for one listening lesson. In the next step, the author applied this teaching plan to Class Two of Grade Two from the high school affiliated to Nankai University which is a key secondary school in Tianjin. From questionnaires and interviews of students as well as the reflection of the author herself, the author found that there are some problems in the implementation of tasks, which is far from the author’s assumptions. There is a big gap between real situation of applying tasks and theories about tasks. This thesis is a beneficial attempt which helps new English teachers improve the recognition of applying task-based language teaching to listening. And then new English teachers can extract experience and draw a lesson from what the author did in the task-based English listening class in Junior High School. As a case analysis, this thesis can not be adapted for all situations but provide an example for further researches.
