In recent years, unit design has gradually become a main research direction of primary school English teaching in Shanghai, but not so popular in Zhejiang province. In light of the teaching material of PEP in Zhejiang province, this paper will study how to effectively implement the whole unit design.During the process of research, the author wants to study on how to organize the teaching contents as a whole, how to take teaching methods into overall design, how to arrange teaching time integrally and skillfully and how to design the homework as a whole.Through the observation of teaching in Shanghai, the author analyzes their ideas of design and summarizes the methods of how to implement the unit integrity instruction design, then applies them to my own teaching, further improves the unit integrity instruction design in my classroom. Finally the author will summarize a suitable teaching method for PEP book. This research proved that this teaching design was conducive to make full use of time resources, improve the teaching efficiency, and promote the overall development of students’ English comprehensive ability. At the same time, teachers’ teaching skills could be improved.Unit design in Shanghai emphasizes that teachers should determine the unit topic in the first place. It requires teachers rearrange the important knowledge in the unit overall around the unit topic, design the teaching objectives, teaching methods and teaching contents of each period as a whole, and pay attention to the connection between each period and the integration of teaching materials. But when the teaching contents and the unit topic don’t match, teachers are lack of effective methods. This paper reviews the related research at home and abroad about the whole unit design and English discourse teaching for primary school. It tries to proceed from the overall design of the unit to teach around the unit theme and to find a breakthrough dimension. It expounds the specifics of operation strategies and specific effect which are based on the text reconstruction, task driven and pragmatic output.This paper consists of six chapters. The first chapter puts forward the research background and significance of unit integrity instruction design. The second chapter reviews the previous literature in this field. The third chapter states the theoretical framework and methodology. The fourth chapter describes how the unit integrity instruction design in Shanghai is practiced, discusses the differences between this teaching mode and the traditional one, observes the teaching effect in the classroom and learns from others’ strong points to offset one’s weakness. The fifth chapter discusses my own practice on unit integrity instruction design, including the introduction of teaching object; the problems and specific implementation of teaching. The sixth chapter provides a summary of the research outcomeThese findings suggest that it is beneficial to cultivate the students’ learning motivation and to cultivate the practical ability of using language by focusing on the topic and making the topic atmosphere throughout the unit teaching. In this way, students can receive faster. Unit design in a holistic way is in the hope of making primary school English teaching more systemic by integrating vocabulary, syntax and discourse into a whole and eventually yielding a more satisfying teaching outcome. At last, a sample instructional design is made in order to demonstrate how to apply this model to real primary school English class teaching.
