Geography is the human relations to a comprehensive discipline, comprehensive, space, regional geography is an important feature. Learning geography, therefore, need to have a certain space cognitive ability. In geography teaching activities, the map as a second language of geography teaching the importance of self-evident, map not only express the spatial distribution of all kinds of things, contact and describe the developing time of geographic things change. With the rapid development of era and the progress of science and technology, all kinds of map is full of our daily life, make people’s life more convenient. However, how to understand more clearly through the accumulation of geographical knowledge map or better use maps to solve practical problems, be every citizen should have the quality.The junior middle school stage is the key stage of earth and maps system know, for the students of junior middle school learning geography curriculum, map reading, knowledge chart, analysis of map ability is of vital importance, geography teacher should pay attention to in the process of teaching to cultivate the student’s ability of spatial cognition. By cultivating junior middle school students ability to construct mental map, exercise students’ geographical thinking, improve students’ ability in spatial cognition, promote the all-round development of students, this is consistent with the concept of postmodern perspective of education. How to make students in the course of learning geography at the same time, constantly enrich constructing geography knowledge, geography knowledge further systematic and logical, and fostering the junior middle school students’ geographical thinking ability and promote the comprehensive development of students has become a problem to be solved a geographer.The author through to the henan province four classes of three junior high school students mental map building, investigation of the current situation of about seven or eight grade students mental map building, through the survey data analysis is not system study geography because of gender differences in the seventh grade students influence ability to construct mental map slightly, but not decisive, along with the study of geography curriculum, mental map building gradually perfect, the gender differences caused by the ability to construct mental map differences can be ignored.Based on pedagogy, psychology, education psychology, geography education as the theoretical basis, through to the related literature at home and abroad, data access and sorting; Design a questionnaire of three junior high school students in henan province to build mental map status survey; Finishing the questionnaire data, analysis of survey data shows that the present situation of junior high school students to construct mental map; Self-study and guided by teachers and students with the combination of junior middle school students to construct psychological strategy map and map building method. For secondary school teachers training junior high school students’ interest in geography subject, improve middle school students’ ability of spatial cognition, promote the all-round development of students, provide a reference basis. Building of junior middle school students mental map strategy and method were discussed, aimed at getting more geography teachers pay much attention to the cultivation of the middle school students’ ability to construct mental map, to improve the students’ ability of space cognition, strengthen the students’ interest in learning geography, promote students’ comprehensive development.
