With the deepening of education reform, Mental health education has not only become one of the most dynamic areas of school education, but also an important part of school education, being an important symbol of modern schools. Strengthen the mental health education has been the important content of primary and secondary schools’ education in intellectual economy age and it has also been the new requirements from educative reform for primary and secondary schools’ education. As an executant of primary and secondary schools’ education, the mental health education teachers’ professional ability directly related to the primary and secondary schools’ educational work, which has attracted great attention of education department. So what kind of professional ability should the mental health education teachers have, how is the competency condition of their professional ability, how to culture their professional ability will be the pressing problem currently.In order to make the mental health education teachers’ professional ability requirements and competency condition clear and enhance their professional ability, this research selected teachers from primary and secondary schools as subject investigated.Firstly, we used interviews method to interview nine primary and secondary mental health education teachers as well as their four direct leaders, so that we can make the mental health education teachers’ work contents clear and gather 30 professional ability items including four types of ability such as general ability, teaching ability, counseling ability and research ability. Secondly, three primary and secondary mental health education teachers in Lanzhou was observed respectively in the cases, making an in-depth analysis of their job condition, job trait, job relation and competency condition.Thirdly, we conducted the questionnaire survey used for testing professional ability condition to the 139 mental health education teachers of primary and secondary schools.The compiling of the questionnaire was based on the professional ability bill collected from the interviews. The questionnaire includes two sub-questionnaires, one is the job demand ability and the other one is the ability they already have.On the basis of the integrated use of interviews, observation and survey methods,we draw the conclusions as follow:(1) From the position trait, mental health educationteachers’ work has much content, their work is concrete and stable, but not specialized.Their work has much relevance with other positions and is strict with professional knowledge and technique. They have preferable work condition and their work content have a close relation with the professional ability requirement.(2)The questionnaire we compiled has good reliability and validity, which includes general ability, scientific research ability, counseling ability, teaching ability in two sub-questionnaires.The demand of mental health education teachers’ positions is high for general ability,counseling ability, teaching ability and is low for research ability. The mental health education teachers qualified better in general ability, teaching ability and qualified worse in counseling ability, scientific research ability.(3)On the whole, the job demand ability of mental health education teachers from primary and secondary schools is significantly higher than competency ability, their level of competency is middling.According to the conclusions from research and proceeding from the perspective of professional ability, this research offered some proposals to the mental health education teachers’ in-service training and college mental health education students’ culturing.
