Ancient poetry embodies the deepest inspiration as well as wisdom of us Chinese nation.It has been the most splendid art treasure in the history of Chinese literature with its refining language, graceful rhythm and rich connotations.Ancient poetry teaching,as one of the most important parts of Chinese teaching,plays the role of improving Chinese accomplishment,edifying students’ temperament,elevating their aesthetic ability and cultivating their characters.However,the current status of ancient poetry teaching is not satisfying,especially in Dongxiang,which is a minority autonomous county in Gansu province.Under the guidance of new curriculum reform,the present research is carried out by employing questionnaire(for 390 students and 37 teachers in three senior high schools in Dongxiang),teacher interview and class observation.It will be mainly based on the theories of psychology,pedagogy,Chinese education and the researcher’s own teaching practice.The research is supposed to reveal the current status of ancient poetry teaching in Dongxiang,to try to find out the causes and put forward corresponding countermeasures,hoping to offer any useful enlightenment of ancient poetry teaching in Dongxiang.By analyzing results of all the questionnaires and class observation along with the answers of teacher interviews,the main problems and their causes of ancient poetry teaching in three senior high schools in Dongxiang are as follow:first,students have less interest in ancient poetry learning.The cause of this problem comes from school teachers,students themselves and family education;second,there are not convenient and effective ways of learning ancient poetry for students.It is the cause that many students don’t like learning ancient poetry; third,old teaching method and single teaching model are used in ancient poetry teaching.School teachers put more emphasizes on class teaching than students’ active participation.Also,they attach more importance to test skills than students’ emotion cultivating;fourth,poem chanting is neglected most of the time.The main cause of this problem is that teachers didn’t realize the importance of poem chanting;fifth, teachers themselves don’t have rich accomplishments in poetry andtheir poetic connoisseurship and teaching skills needs promoting.The lack of the consciousness of self-improvement,the dependence of reference books,the pertinence while teaching are the main causes of this problem.For these problems and causes,the present research is supposed to introduce some feasible teaching improving strategies which include the following four:firstly,students’ interests in learning ancient poetry should be stimulated;secondly,campus culture construction should be strengthened and the solution of sharing the teaching and learning resources should be put forward;thirdly,ancient poetry teaching approach and the rearrangement of the teaching content should be optimized;fourthly, strengthen reading,cause emotional resonance;fifthly,teachers’ own cultural and professional qualities should be elevated.The present research is conducted attempting to offer any useful enlightenment of ancient poetry teaching in Dongxiang and some practical guidance in the researcher’s own teaching career.
