Wei Yuan,living in the period when the feudal society had falling into decadence in C hina while western powers had risen and expanded in succession,was a famous illuminativ e ideologist and educationist in modern China. He put forward the long-term strategic view points of "Fixing Our Eyes on the Western World" and " Learning Merits from the Foreig n to Conquer the Foreign" to resist foreign invasion. Living in late Qing Dynasty when th e weak stood as an easy prey to the strong, he laid special stress on the patriotic educatio n and suggested that the development of patriotic education should be emphasized th rough changing the goal of it conceptually, updating the educational concept theoriti cally, especially the moral cultivation of patriotic persons,reforming the education system practically to construct his own unique patriotic system. Although his educational idea was not realized at that time, it is of special position in modern Chinese education history and of enlightening significance to middle school students’ patriotic educational work in contemporary China.This thesis discusses the inspiration and the guiding role of Wei Yuan’s patriotism on our middle school students’ patriotic education from the following aspects.The First Chapter mainly introduces the background and research value of Wei Yuan’s patriotism, discusses the present research status of Wei Yuan’s patriotism and introduces the research goal, the research approach and research methods.The Second Chapter mainly discusses the historical background of Wei Yuan ’ s patriotism. His patriotism was deeply affected by his life experiences and the evolution of his thoughts. Huxiang culture, which has a strong spirit of patriotism and takes practice and application seriously, is the culture source of Wei Yuan’s patriotism. The evolution concept of social history and materialism epistemology is the theoretical basis of Wei Yuan ’ s patriotism. The national crisis of Qing government--rejection and depreciation is practical foundation of Wei Yuan’s patriotism.Wei Yuan’s patriotism has distinct characteristics of the times, a strong cultural flavor, pragmatism and obvious historical limitations.The Third Chapter is about the enlightenment of Wei Yuan’s patriotism on our middle school students’ patriotic education. The author chooses a middle school as a reference to understand the main problems and countermeasures of middle school students’ patriotic education in the new era. On cultivation objectives of patriotism, we should adhere to theprinciple ‘Putting What is Learned into Practice’. On the content of fostering, we should adhere to the principle ‘Talents should have both ability and moral integrity’. On the specific way of patriotism training, we should adhere to the principle ‘Real knowledge comes from practice’.
