In recent years, with the development of English education theories and the renewal of teaching concept and teaching technology, student-student interaction has gradually shown its importance in English teaching. This kind of interaction can not only help improve the students’ abilities of English learning and communication, but also enhance students’ English learning motivation. Due to the importance of the student-student interaction, many researchers have conducted a lot of research of relevant theories about the interaction. There are also some teachers but not so many concentrating on the research according to their classroom practice. This thesis aims at the study of student-student interaction in the junior high school. Through the study, we try to find out the current situation of the interaction in English classes, so that we can get to know the problems among the students and the influential factors during the interaction and then offer some proper solutions and strategies to the problems.This study takes the student-student interaction in English classes in Huizhen Academy in Ning Bo as the study background and analyses the teaching patterns of student-student interaction in the school, by the analysis of relevant theories, questionnaire survey, interviews and classroom observation. It also tests how effective some proper strategies are about improving student-student interaction in the English classroom.This thesis is based on the questionnaire survey of all the students in Grade 8 in Huizhen Academy, the interview of 12 English teachers and the classroom observation of two classes in Grade 8. We find that student-student interaction has been widely used in English classes, however, still many problems have been found. For example, the interactive activities are simple or boring. The time of interaction is limited. Not so many students take an active part in interaction. It can’t help improve students’ grades in a short time. The influential factors about the problems are also discussed in the thesis. In fact, the content of interaction, the present evaluative standard, the teachers’ views, the students’ opinions, and the other social factors are the main parts that can affect the interaction.In order to solve these problems, some suggestions according to the affecting factors are come up with in the following aspects, including the reasonable grouping, the interaction preparation, multiple presentation and evaluation and so on. We hope it can give some enlightenment to so many students and teachers, so as to promote the development of the student-student interaction in English classes.
