Today’s English teaching only pay attention to memorize the English vocabulary mechanically while ignoring the characteristics of students’ psychology and age. Therefore, how to stimulate the students’ interests in learning English using new teaching methods and improve their English learning effect and cultivate the ability of using English flexibly for pupils, etc. is a dilemma confronted by many primary and middle school English teachers nowadays, and this is the direction of the primary and middle school teachers constantly explored. For this purpose, many educators participate in the practice of solving this topic, and the application of textbook plays in the process of primary school English class teaching is one of the good practice patterns.The idea of textbook plays is to adapt the stories inside English textbooks to the form of plays, and express the theme of textbooks in the form of plays. The process requires students to participate independently and act of their own accords, and then the classroom language teaching process becomes an interactive communication process between teachers and students. This paper begins with discussing the background and significance of textbook plays application in the primary school English teaching, and then uses the questionnaire survey, classroom observation, interviews between teachers and students and experimental comparison method in experiments to verify in multiple perspectives if the teaching method of using textbook plays in the process of primary school English classroom teaching can stimulate the students’interests in learning English and improve their English learning effect and cultivate the ability of using English flexibility for pupils, etc.Based on many years of practical experience of primary school English teaching, the author applies the idea of textbook plays to primary school English teaching through a series of teaching reform, and this idea has achieved some positive results. Through one semester English teaching reform practice on two classes of grade three in this school, we found that the textbook plays teaching method can stimulate the students’ interests in learning English and improve their English learning effect and cultivate the ability of using English flexibly for pupils and create an English class teaching atmosphere of students-oriented and teacher-led.
