Autonomous learning is a new way of learning advocated in the new curriculum reforms. The ability of autonomous learning is a necessary for people sustainable development in today’s society. Senior middle school is an important turning in life of a student, the cultivation of autonomous learning ability is particularly important at this time, how to cultivate their ability of independent learning is a problem worth pondering for every teacher.In this paper, the students in Lanxi Shanghua middle school are investigated as an example, by means of using questionnaires and interviews, the autonomous learning of biology is studied. The questionnaires used in this study is an adaptation of the questionnaires in paper by Zhao Huixue from Henan University in the year 2013,which is more targeted to the subject. It’s Cronbach’s alpha is 0.921(more than 0.5),which shows that the credibility is well for the study.The survey results show that:the level of autonomous learning of biology is generally very low among students in senior middle school. The learning motivation and self-efficacy are both low, most of them are lack of self-confidence and can not make a study plan reasonably. They can’t realize the significance of biology. The biological autonomous learning in girls is generally higher than boys, especially in learning time(sig=0.035)and learning process(sig=0.045).While the students of arts and science(sig=0.321),between countryside and town(sig=0.551),the autonomous learning in biology showed no significant difference.After the investigation, in order to cultivate and improve the ability of autonomous learning of biology, the method of the first post-teaching is carried out for a two-month long experiment between two classes in classroom teaching. Through the comparison of the performances before and after the experiment, as well as the results of questionnaires and interviews, it shows the method can do some thing to cultivate students’ good learning habits. It can improve the ability of autonomous learning, especially in cooperative learning and using the outline marker to help memory, and it is also can help students get a higher marks easily.
