Mathematics anxiety is defined as feelings of anxiety, tension and even fear during one manipulating of numbers, applying math concept, acquiring math knowledge or taking a math exam in his life or study. Those with higher anxiety will hold a negative attitude towards math and even have psychological barriers.This paper, firstly, introduces some main research achievement of mathematics anxiety, then makes some adjustment to the Questionnaire of Middle School Students’ Mathematics Anxiety edited by Gao yongjin and other people, and conducting a questionnaire. This questionnaire, which takes the students of two middle school separately in Changsha and Yongzhou as the main respondent, makes a comparative analysis of mathematics anxiety between country and city middle students from the perspective of age and grade so as to find some differences and similarities of those students. This paper makes some conclusion after analysis and puts forward some suggestions to teachers, students and parents. There are some conclusions as follows:1. Mathematics anxiety of rural middle school students is higher than that of urban middle students. As for the whole mathematics anxiety, mathematics anxiety of rural middles students is apparently higher than that of urban middle students; as for the four dimensions of mathematics anxiety, the negative evaluation of anxiety, math exam anxiety, math knowledge anxiety and life situation anxiety of rural middles students is higher than those of urban school students. The negative evaluation anxiety of rural school students and urban school students are the highest.2. There are some significant differences among Junior one, two and three of mathematics anxiety of rural school students and urban school students. Mathematics anxiety of all rural middle school grades is higher than that of urban school students.3. There are also some significant differences between middle school girls and boys for mathematics anxiety. In.the whole, the mathematics anxiety of boys is lower than that of girls and the mathematics anxiety of urban middle school boys is also lower than that of rural middle school boys.At last, there are some main factors that contribute to the differences of mathematics anxiety between urban and rural middle school students: students’ interest in learning math, students’ learning ability, the learning atmosphere of a class, parents’ education background and so on. Based on those factors, this paper puts forward some suggestions to the teachers, students and parents.
