Pragmatism was introduced into China at the beginning of twentieth Century. It has experienced a process of the development—climax—criticism—further development. Especially, with the further development of market economy and the popularity and application of new media, the by-products of the development of economic society quickly influence people’s thinking and behavior. Colleges are deeply influenced by them, which causes the confusion of college students’ ideas and the shake of mainstream culture of Marxist doctrine. Therefore, research on negative effects of pragmatism on college students and its countermeasures is meaningful. It contributes to the cultivation of college students’ healthy personality and making them play a leading role in socialist core values. And it also helps to enrich the contents and methods of ideological and political education.This dissertation is intended to reveal the essence of pragmatism. By means of questionnaires about influences of pragmatism on college students and combined with the latest achievements of pragmatic research in domestic and international academic circles it analyses the literature and takes the case analyses, which will reveal the negative influences of pragmatism on college students, and analyze the deep reasons. On the ground of these negative influences some effective countermeasures are raised.This dissertation consists of four parts. The first part is the introduction. It explains the research background, research significance, research status and research methods and innovations. The second part is an overview of the theory. It mainly includes the historical origin and development, theoretical origin and basic connotation of pragmatism and the analyses of it. The third part aims at questionnaires about influences of pragmatism on college students to reveal its negative influence on college students’ ideology and morality, ideal of life, interpersonal relationship, professional learning, career choice. The dissertation analyzes the reasons from the visual angles of ideological and political education, college educational goal, market economy, campus culture and college students themselves. On the basis of the third part, the fourth part puts forward coping strategies from the angles of teaching and of ideological and political education, college educational goal, in-depth understanding of pragmatism, campus culture, and college students’ psychological mechanism, etc.The innovation of this dissertation tries to bring to light the essence of pragmatism more deeply by the theory of Marxist doctrine and to reveal some features of college students’ pragmatism by means of questionnaire survey and case analyses. At the same time, the innovation attempts to analyze the influence of pragmatism on college students and its countermeasures with the theories of political communication studies and psychology.
