The Chinese measure words are divided into two main groups namely the measure words for noun and verb. Compared to the measure words for noun, the study done on measure words for verb was met with delay which resulted in a lack of sufficient recognition and data for it. This eventuated the difficulties of pedagogy and learning as well as the lack of resources related to teaching verbal classifier in a classroom. Even though the study on measure words for verb has been progressing well in many aspects; including a return of abundant outcomes, much has not been done to study learners whose first language are not Chinese.The subjects of this study is based on learners in a primary school in Brunei. This study focuses on the learners’ usage of eight different special and borrowed measure words for verb.Through questionnaires and daily data collection and analysis, this study will investigate the type of bias the learners experience during the learning of measure words for verb; analyze the cause of the bias and lastly, provide some teaching suggestions to tackle the bias.The first chapter is the introduction. It clarifies the background of the study, purpose and significance of the study, scope and limitations as well as the data sources.The second chapter focuses on the summarized research of studies based on verbal classifier. Incorporating the disciplines of the research ontology of measure words for verb as well as the experience of teaching the subjects whose first language is not Chinese, the chapter aims to find the fruit of the bias and suggests new pedagogical implications as well as address the limitations of this study.The third chapter investigates Brunei primary learners’ usage of measure words for verb and their learning situation. Included in the same chapter are the design, content and the inquiry analysis of the questionnaires.The fourth chapter entails the analysis of Brunei primary learners’ learning bias of measure words for verb such as the type of bias and the cause of it. The analysis is obtained through data collection from daily conversations and questionnaires which classifies the type of learners’ bias into three categories: incorrectly add, wrong sequence and omission. The cause of their bias will be analyzed based on these three categories, such as their personal and vocational factors as well as the contribution from the learning and teaching environment.The fifth chapter details the suggestions of teaching suggestions for teaching measure words for verb in Brunei primary school which is based on three aspects such as the teacher, learner and resources.The last chapter is the conclusion.
