| Since 2007 Shanghai successfully held the 12 th World Summer Special Olympics, the development and research of Chinese Special Olympics were ushered in a new stage. China has become the world’s fastest-growing Special Olympics nation. At the end of 2010, the Chinese Special Olympics athletes have reached more than 100 million people. Although the development of our country’s Special Olympics is rapid, its development in different region is not identical. It is mainly concentrated in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other developed regions. As the main approach and field, the Special Olympics trainings in special education school is very important. In order to promote the Special Olympics extensively and understand the Special Olympics movement in other regions of China, it is very important for us to strengthen the Countermeasures for the development of Special Olympics training, especially in special education schools. This study is based on this status to do the research and it focuses on how the Special Olympics is carried out in the special education schools in Chengdu City.This research mainly uses the following research methods: document researchã€observing, individual interviewã€questionnaire survey and case study. There are nine special education schools were selected as sampling schools. Main research content includes those arears: the training and joining situation of special childrenã€teachers level of special schoolsã€sites situationã€the attitudes towards Special Olympics training of teachers ã€parents of some special children. The whole research focuses on how to improve the life quality of the students with special needs through Special Olympics training in special education schools.Through practical investigation, this research has drawn the following key conclusions: from the understanding of Special Olympics, not only the Special Olympics training teachers but also the parents of students with special needs who took part in Special Olympics games or the students with special needs themselves, they knows something about Special Olympics but they has some misunderstanding about it; most investigated special education schools are forced to carry out urgent periodic Special Olympics training forced by local education bureau, only few special education schools carry out regular Special Olympics training which has been integrated into school curriculum; from teachers, there are not enough teachers who can carry out Special Olympics training and these teachers lack of training experiences and there are few professional training opportunities offered to them; from Special Olympics training programs, some easy, simple and available games are popular in investigated schools and most of those programs are summer programs. Compared with Shanghai and Beijing, Chengdu city has low frequencies to take part in Special Olympics, only few special education schools keep high frequency to take part in that; from the forms that special education school take part in Special Olympics in Chengdu, most schools would like to take part in individual programs, few schools will take part in team competition programs, much less schools will take part in inclusive team competition programs.As a whole, Special Olympics non-sports programs are not well carried out in Chengdu special education schools. There are few programs and species are not rich, it relates to training teachers’ limited energy and shallow understanding towards Special Olympics; the parents of students with special needs who take part in Special Olympics training support Special Olympics training but they have little knowing about Special Olympics training and pay low attention to that. Most of those parents think that Special Olympics training sounds good but it has no benefits for their children’s future and occupation; the investigated schools few consider how to connected Special Olympics training and special needs students’ rehabilitation but the parents pay more attention to how the Special Olympics training can improve their children’s rehabilitation. As a whole, both lack the considerations about how to promote special needs children’s life quality through Special Olympics training.Aiming to the status quo of Special Olympics training in special education schools in Chengdu city, this paper propound following suggestions: strength the professional and continuous teacher training for Special Olympics training; helping training teachers and parents of students with special needs to realize the rehabilitation value in Special Olympics training; integration all kinds of resources to carry out Special Olympics training; forming the developmental model of Special Olympics training in which the family, special education school and community can work together; enlarging the range of Special Olympics non-sport programs; increasing the input to sports establishments in special education schools; constructing the sustainable support system for Special Olympics movement. |
