With the fast development of technology, economy and the society, the definition of talents is more and more strict. Therefore as an important cradle of training the talented, a university should conform to the historical trend of the time and cultivate more and more highly qualified talents. These talents should have logical structure of knowledge and ability and develop in all-round way.Therefore, at present, the trend and object of higher education is cultivating integ rated talents. Colleges reform one by one and begin to pay more attention to the study and practice of general education. Many universities start to carry out general educati on and the effect is remarkable. General education is a combination of education ideas and course mode. As a kind of education theory, it goes through the whole course of education; a mode of course implement, it combines with, concentrating on cultivating brand new social elites who are well developed, of acuteness and sound sense.In a long history, ideological and political education accounted for a large proportion of our mother country’s higher education, playing an important role in nurturing college students’ view of the world, their life and value. The implement of ideological and political education has made such a difference in recent years, with the reformation and development of the higher education in our nation. Whereas, still some issues need our attention. Given its consequence, we should improve it. Thus,we bring this topic——the way to impart ideological and political education.At this time, between liberal education and ideological and political education in China’s universities, there are many common things in teaching targets and courses.Thus, this essay focuses on how to combine these two topics and contributes to the development of higher education and cultivate social elites. In terms of this, this essay stresses the features, contents and targets of liberal education and ideological and political education to figure out the relationship of these two concepts. Duringborrowing from American’s experience, we should also put the real situation in our mind.This essay is composed of five parts: the first, an exordium in which we can make its research value too clear. This essay would summarize all fruits of this field by scholars and explain the elementary method of the study.The second, an introduction of some related theories and concepts which base on two parts——general education and ideological and political education, analyzing their contents and characteristics and exposing the theory of this essay spiraling the two’s interrelationship.The third, an analysis of the function of ideological and political education in American general education, giving detailed discourse about the history and characteristics of American general education.The fourth, an exploration of the real problems confronting the ideological and political education in our colleges from the point of general education.The fifth, a combination of all the above, stating the influence of ideological and political education on application of American general education in these aspects——educational contents, education methods, reality challenges, value attacks brought by social reformation and constructing higher educational ideological and political education.
