The quality of talent cultivation is one of the most important considerations in the international competition of higher education. The faculty are the core of talent cultivation, and their development is increasingly becoming a hot concern in the research fields of adult education, lifelong education and higher education,etc. In this paper, the comparative study of Sino-Japanese continuing education for university teachers is based on the background of the cross development of the above research areas and carried out in the perspective of the faculty development in universities.The reasons the study selects continuing education for university teachers in Japan as the comparison object are as follows. First of all, Japan is a power of higher education in Asia and it has started studying university faculty’s continuing education and faculty development since the 1980s. Secondly, Japan has constructed the university teachers’continuing education system with Japanese characteristics by actively learning from the experiences of United States and European countries as well as series of reform and innovation based on its status quo. Finally, China and Japan both locates in Asia and own similar traditional culture and development situation. Therefore, studying on the continuing education of university faculty in Japan could provide some useful references for the development of faculty in colleges and universities and the construction of some related institutions in our country.There are four methods including literature analysis, website research, case study and comparative study applied in the article. The development situation of continuing education for university teachers in China and Japan are analyzed and summarized in the paper on the basis of the collection and discussion of the related research literature in recent years as well as the collection and analysis of organization annual reports and other website information through web investigation of representative institutions in China and Japan selected from three levels as country, regions and universities Afterwards, the status quo, the problems and their causes of continuing education for university teachers in China and Japan are expounded.It is found that there are differences in the type of institution, concept of development as well as form and content of practice of the continuing education for faculty in universities between China and Japan due to their different legal system construction, higher education development pattern and related national reform policies. Based on the achievements and deficiencies of the two countries in the continuing education of university teachers, the author put forward to some suggestions on the development of university teachers’ continuing education and related institutions in China, such as to improve the influence of the faculty development institutions, to tighten the relationship of regional colleges and universities, to strengthen the sharing of teachers’development resources, to promote the sustainable development of teachers’continuing education with innovation and to scientifically plan the training of faculty in university, etc.
