Research on National College Entrance Examination has always been hot, many results appear every year. But most research on NCEE emphasizes subject appreciation,solution, trend, and strategies. Most research tends to be on knowledge. Knowledge and ability are both important for NCEE. In this period of time which promotes education for all-around development, ability is necessary. Under background of the new curriculum reform, NCEE not only test knowledge, but also test ability.Papers of nearly three years of New curriculum standardⅠ, Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing are selected for this Research. Collecting data from lateral distribution and longitudinal distribution of ability structure, then data are compared in different aspects.Data from lateral distribution of ability structure shows that questions focusing on the ability of analysis and synthesis occupy the largest proportion. The ability of analysis and synthesis is the focus of all the papers of the four regions, which shows that analyzing question, solving problems and synthesizing physics are necessary in NCEE.The share of questions focusing on experimental ability or mathematical ability remains stable. Questions on experiment test the use of device, data processing and analysis of experimental phenomena and experimental error.Data from longitudinal distribution of ability structure shows that questions of the papers of the four regions at multistructural-level have the largest proportion. Questions at multistuctural-level test the situation of which student grasp knowledge. Questions at relational-level share a large proportion, which test ability that students organize knowledge. Objective questions distribute at all levels, distinguishing and selecting students. Dynamics and electromagnetism which are the backbone knowledge distribute at all levels. Thermology, optics and atomic physics mainly distribute at unistructural-level and multistructural-level, testing basic knowledge of physics.
