Study On Subject Construction In Initial Stage Of Nanjing Institute Of Meteorology(1960-1965)

Nanjing Institute of Meteorology was the first meteorological University established after the founding of New China, and it lies the foundations for the prosperity of Meteorological career in China. This thesis focus on the discipline construction of Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, especially on the establish background, discipline setting, teacher training and features of student groups. It gives a comprehensive study on the discipline construction, scientific researches, features and affections of Meteorology, and fills the blank of study on discipline construction in early period of school.Thesis combed the creation process of Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, including the domestic background,preparatory of school, remand reason. Coinciding with the urgent needs of the national meteorological services, the Nanjing Institute of Meteorology came into being, and the older generation of Meteorologists by the lead of Changwang Tu devoted enormous time and effort in it. In 1963, Nanjing Institute of Meteorology worked as an independent college, this indicated the formation of meteorological discipline system nationwide and did a significant help for the dominant position of Nanjing Institute of Meteorology in Meteorology.Thesis generalized the situations in early period of Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, untied the confusion between faculty and discipline setting base on the historical data. Meanwhile, thesis referred to many other discipline construction backgrounds of domestic schools in the same period, and made comparison with the Nanjing University, Beijing Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University and other institutions, which provides a new reference for the study of origin of Chinese higher meteorology education, and this is one of the salient features of the study as well.Thesis summed up the achievements of teachers in early period of Nanjing Institute of Meteorology, including teaching stuff, teachers’training, research projects and other aspects. By listing the teaching staff of faculty, this gives a basic outlook of teachers construction of Nanjing Institute of Meteorology. In addition, teachers’ training mode, the directions of research projects are also involved, in particular, thesis gave a high evaluation on the projects in air pollution which reflects the prospective vision held by Professor Pengfei Wang.Thesis also did an innovative exploration on the group of students, and analyzed the birthplace, age, physical situation for nearly 1000 students. Combined with the specific circumstances of the 1960s, the admission policy of the Central Weather Bureau and Education Department also be made into consideration. In the unique perspective of the student groups, the pros and cons over student management, experiential learning, academic assessment and other aspects would be well reflected.As the representative school of meteorology at that time, Nanjing Institute of Meteorology has a distinctive brand of times. Discussing the contents of their disciplines, features and impacts, on the one hand, will help us understand the foundation on which meteorology career lay to survive, and on the other hand, will show the process of revival of meteorological services, then provide a reference for advancement of meteorological career and student training.
