Relief Work For Solitary Old People And Its Thoughts Of Socialization In A Broad Sense

As a social worker for internship, the author completed a relief work for a widowed and solitary old lady. In this case, the client may represent or reflect the general characteristics of such vulnerable group as widowed and solitary elderly group with mild or moderate disability at 65 years old and above. This type of relief objects may be physically disable, living alone or left unattended. Apart from such main features, the most serious problem is their loss of confidence in social life. The central problems discussed in this paper are whether this type of elderly group can regain confidence in life through social work and relief in the individual case and confidence can be regained with what methods.This study was carried out from November to February next year, with the client’s plights mainly as follows: With afunction in her legs, the client lacks confidence in internal life, with anxiety and difficulty to adapt to life, while the supply of elements of life from outside, social care, social support and possession of social resources are relatively scarce. After the intervention of the author and colleagues, with free delivery for the client through linking the supermarket in the community, the client is assisted to experience the care and support from the society and encouraged to have more contact with her relatives, neighbors and church members, with the overall objective of this service work in this individual case achieved, namely, the client can better adapt to his current life. Through service and intervention, the greatest problem troubling the daily life of the client is solved, and the client’s anxiety is gradually eased, with the improvement in the self-identity, affirmation of self-value and enhancement of the confidence in life. Besides, the ties with her sister, neighbors, community and church members are strengthened. On this basis, the client gradually gains the concern and help from these external resources. The client changes her previous faith in life, enhancing the abilities to solve problems and starting to face her own life with a positive attitude.The focus in the case study is on the following two issues in terms of ideas and research methods. On the one hand, as individual case of social work, for such problems as how the value goal is led to meet the requirement of accurate poverty reduction and how to better coordinate various elements related to the action system in this case under the guidance of this value goal, attempts are made in this paper to introduce two-dimensional structure of action system value of social work, namely, dimension of purposiveness in action system and dimension of technical efficiency. Thus, interpretative frame of action system analysis is incorporated into such processes as accepting the case, building relationships, intervention, closing the case and assessment in this case, improving the integrity of action system and the consciousness of theoretical method in the unification of value and efficiency goals. On the other hand, about the problem that with what kind of ideas the client can regain confidence in life, the explanation and logic of the socialization in a broad sense are selected and its logical relationship with the socialization in a narrow sense, two-dimensional structure and idea of social action system and new theory of evolution of Parsons are discussed in this paper.
