With the development of the world economy and society, English has become a veryimportant tool in communication. Nowadays, the majority of the middle school students havealready mastered the basic English grammar and a certain amount of vocabulary. Althoughthey have acquired the preliminary English reading and writing abilities, their oral English isstill generally very poor. The reasons can be attributed as follows. On the one hand, due tovarious reasons, oral English teaching in middle schools has often been neglected; on theother hand, the focus of language teaching has been on linguistic knowledge, and littleattention has been given to the actual use of language.As we all know, language ability is acquired through the communication with otherpeople, including language communication and inner thoughts communication. Whenlanguage techniques are integrated into real and natural language environment, learners wouldlearn a language actively. Therefore, oral English teaching should lay great stress ondeveloping students’ ability of language and communication.The author of this thesis did an experiment in class Seven and Eight in Grade Eight ofNO.1Middle School in Yuling. According to the result of the investigation static, in theabsence of proper use of communicative approach in practical English teaching, students’communicative competence is unsatisfactory. The reasons can be attributed as follows. Whenthe teacher carries out classroom oral activity, most of the students are not interested in it.Secondly, the students’ basic skills are not good. Most of the students can not answer thequestions in English or discuss something in English. We can see that students are lacking ofsolid basic skills. Thirdly, students have few opportunities to listen to English. Englishspeaking ability must be built on the basis of more practice. The last but not least, students are lacking of necessary vocabulary. Due to the lack of vocabulary, students can not use sentencesfrom their mind to express themselves. As a result they cannot use English to communicatewith others freely. Besides for English learners, to enlarge their vocabulary is necessary.According to the author’s study in class Seven and Eight in Grade Eight of NO.1MiddleSchool in Yuling, cultivating students’ language ability, simply relying on imitation, makingdialogue and singing are not enough. People can draw a conclusion from the reality thattaking the life experience and interests as the starting point and designing diverse teachingactivities with definite purpose plays decisive roles in cultivating students’ oral English.Through communicative activities, teachers can add new knowledge to the students’knowledge. When students realize that learning English can make them express their ownthoughts, and can obtain more and updated information, their desire of employing English andcompleting the task will be produced.With the basis of Interaction Theory and Constructivism Theory, the author of the essaystarts to present her with macro overview to the existing researches through the use ofinductive method. After the general statement, the author puts forward with her topic.Through the analysis of research and experiment examples, the author tries to prove that thecommunicative approach has the vital significance in enhancing the English classroomteaching effect.According to the experiment, the author finds that when taking the Englishcommunicative teaching approach, we must pay attention to the following two points. Thefirst one is that we must take more exercises in oral English communication. On the one hand,we must create easy classroom atmosphere so as to arise students’ interests. On the other hand,we must create certain topics so as to make sure that students have something to talk about.And the teacher should give students more opportunities to practice speaking, and let themlisten more and speak more. On the other hand, the teacher should make full use of different kind of activities to strengthen the oral English training. The oral English training can becombined with the classroom teaching, practical life and special training activities organizedaccording to necessity. The form can be colorful varied, and the training space is unlimited.The thesis is made up of five parts: first, current situation of oral English teaching inmiddle schools, second, the importance and conception of the communicative approach, third,the application of the approach, fourth, how to take the communicative approach scientificallyso as to improve the teacher’s teaching abilities and students’ speaking abilities. According tothe defects existing in present oral English teaching, in this essay, the communicativeapproach and some related strategies and theories are put together to find effective strategiesand specific mode so as to improve the level of students’ spoken English effectively.
