Twenty-first Centuries is an information-based society of globalization. With the explosion of knowledge, the report of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization presented the concept of "learning to learn" and "lifelong education". New English Curriculum Standards for Elementary Schools points out that the primary task for elementary education is to stimulate and cultivate students’ interest in learning English, so that students can establish self-confidence, develop good learning habits and form effective learning strategies. As the world’s universal language, English teaching and learning is very significant, especially for learners’ autonomous learning ability, which is crucial for English learning efficiency. However, for the lack of favorable communication environment, students’ communicative language learning principle and the real meaning of language learning haven’t been fully reflected. "Dumb English" can be seen everywhere. This paper attempts to study the action of English autonomous learning ability in the primary school so that a breakthrough for the reform of English teaching can be found. This study is an empirical study with the guide of theoretical knowledge, which is mainly based on the theory of autonomous learning, research learning theory, cooperative learning theory and educational service theory. Through theoretical guidance, this paper studies how to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability in English teaching in primary schools and teaches students how to exactly learn English well. From introducing learning strategies to how to use these strategies and the study of specific cases, the final conclusion is drawn. First of all, after studying the present situation of autonomous learning at home and abroad, this paper gives a definition to the concept of autonomous learning. The author believes that the "autonomous learning" means learners first should know the learning content. According to their own reality, the learners determine their own learning goals, choose their own learning methods, time, place, independent or cooperative learning tasks, and they can evaluate their own learning behaviors in a timely manner and make relevant adjustments so as to know what is the real leaning and then get the happiness of learning. Secondly, based on the teachers’ and students’ questionnaire survey and interviews, the author tries to understand their awareness of autonomous learning, autonomous learning method and their autonomous learning environment andconditions as well as the students’ difficulties during study so that the follow-up study on the strategies can be given particular emphasis. The according to the survey result, suitable cultivating strategies on objects can be found which include learning motivation strategies and learning strategies. At last, through cases analysis, the author tries to understand the application of every strategy in teaching practice. To providing sound theoretical basis for the study, the author adopts literature research method and empirical approach and tries to comprehend relevant theories and practice about self-regulated English learning of elementary students and analyzes relevant research development home and abroad about this subject. Through questionnaire survey and interview, the current cultivation situation of autonomous learning ability can be gained and the problems therein can be found. During practical teaching activities, according to the research content, the author designs courses step by step so that the first-hand information can be accumulated. This paper has five parts. The first part is the introduction which elaborates the origin of the study, the background, the current situation of the study at home and abroad, the study objective, significance, the methods adopted as well as the basic thought frame. The second part is concept definition and theoretical basis. This paper mainly elaborates the concept of autonomic learning, the capability and strategy. The capability includes general capacity and innovation capacity. This paper also makes an explanation of learning strategy. In which part, the study of this paper is mainly based on four theories: autonomic learning theory, investigative study theory, cooperative learning theory and education service theory. The third part is a status survey about the autonomic English learning of elementary school students. Based on the questionnaire survey and interview, the author tries to know the status of their cognition of autonomic learning, autonomic learning method, autonomic learning environment and condition as well as students’ expectation for teachers. Through date analysis, the conclusion is made which can provide basis for the implementation strategy study. The fourth part is the core of this paper which studies the cultivating strategy of English autonomic capability for elementary school students. There are various kinds of learning strategy at home and abroad. This paper adheres to the principle of “clear learning goals and stimulating learning motivation”, “creating situation and cultivating learning interest”, “creating cooperative learning atmosphere and maintaining learning motivation”. Based on the problems found in the survey, the author adopts cognitive learning strategy, on-class learning strategy and out-of-classlearning strategy. Cognitive learning strategy mainly studies linguistic learning strategy and organizational strategy. On-class learning strategy includes preparation strategy, participation strategy and learning summary strategy during class.Out-of-class learning strategy includes review and consolidating strategy, research assignment strategy and resource utilization strategy. What’s more, the author analyzes the operation practice of different strategies through analyzing the English teaching cases of the fifth grade students. The fifth part is the conclusion and prospect in which the study limitations are found and the study orientation is pointed for further research.
