In 2011, "Compulsory English Curriculum Standard (2011 edition)" published by Ministry of Education proposed that, efforts should be made in terms of improving assessment methods with an emphasis on assessing students’abilities to communicate in English. How to make assessment facilitate both teachers’teaching and students’ learning has been paid much attention in English education. Based on this issue, the thesis focuses on the reform of English communicative competence assessment, exploring the theoretical basis and practicality of application of performance assessment in measuring students’communicative competence.At the beginning, the thesis illustrates the significance of the performance assessment in English communicative competence assessment. Secondly, the thesis demonstrates and analyzes two core concept--"communicative competence" and "performance assessment" through literature review. Then, a clear implication of English communicative competence will be clarified and a framework of assessment concerning English communicative competence performance will be put forward. In addition, the thesis demonstrates the specific procedures of performance assessment: setting of the assessment objectives, design of performance tasks, rulemaking of scoring and evaluation and feedback. Finally, the thesis explores how to apply performance assessment in English communicative competence evaluation by case study and combining it with the specific teaching content,.Based on the reflection of application of performance assessment in improving English communicative competence, the thesis discusses the following issues and makes certain recommendations. Firstly, teachers have recognized the importance of evaluation, but the concept still needs to be strengthened; secondly, the performance assessment has been applied into teaching, but the evaluation skills remain to be perfected; thirdly, teachers’overall professional quality in evaluation needs to be improved.
