Research On The Aesthetic Value Of Competitive Sports

Competitive sports, an important part of modern sports, is a special social sports practice gradually formed in the development of mankind social civilization. As an integral part of people’s lives in modern society, it can not only bring people’s visual passion and aesthetic pleasure, but also shake people’s minds and uplift their spirits. With the rapid development of political and economical globalization in the current society, modern competitive sports, reflecting people’s common aesthetic ideal and value pursuit in the new period, is gaining increasing recognition and fondness by various countries and nations with its varied forms and rich spiritual culture connotations. The development level and strength of a nation’s competitive sports is an important reflection of its comprehensive strength. Originated in the west, modern competitive sports and Chinese traditional sports culture have some common grounds, while they differ in some aspects at the some time, which brings some contradictions and conflicts against Chinese traditional sports culture in its transmission and development in China. Although China’s competitive sports have developed rapidly and made some achievements, gained a higher social status as well in recent years, some hampered problems also co-occur. Proceeding from the aesthetic perspective and based on the combination of aesthetic principles and practical cases, this paper attempts to interpret the spiritual connotations of competitive sports and explores social aesthetic value of competitive sports, which helps us get a deeper cognition and understanding about the competitive sports and provides a multidivisional theoretical support and reference value for the sound development of China’s competitive sports.Elegance of competitive sports spirit is mainly originated in the aesthetic ideal---pursuing the true, the good, the beautiful and the harmony. The healthy body, the spirits of fair competition, justice and peace, solidarity and cooperation, the noble moral cultivation embodied in the competitive sports are the perfect interpretation of aesthetic elegance. Competitive sports, however, also has the aesthetic pursuit of sublimity. The heroism of hardworking and enterprising, devoted to work, self-challenging and surpassing mediocrity and the tragic character of ceaseless self-development, broken in body but firm in mind, and transcending oneself all display the pursuit of sublimity. Elegance and sublimity are two main important aesthetic characteristics of competitive sports, displaying its unique humanistic charm and aesthetic value. Modern competitive sports not only has the aesthetic function, cultivating people’s morality and building people’s character, but also plays a positive role in promoting the mankind’s peaceful development and social stability. The transmission and progress of competitive sports is good for the heritage and development of human’s spiritual culture, therefore, the study of competitive sports is of great significance and aesthetic value.Through comparing the development process and aesthetic connotations between China and western competitive sports, the thesis analyzes the differences between the two parties, analyzes the strengths and shortcomings of the development of Chinese traditional sports culture in the new period. China should be brave enough to face the opportunities and challenges in the globalization of sports in modern times and selectively draw on the strengths of western competitive sports culture while discard its own bad reasonably to promote the integration and co-existence of China’s traditional competitive sports and modern competitive sports, thus explores a development path abreast with times and with Chinese characteristics for China’s modern sports culture.
