From 21 centuries, the picture book has become the most important reading books between children and teenagers. Because the pictures are beautiful, the words are simple, the stories are funny and the intention is deep. The English Curriculum Standards for Primary School says:" Students can listen and read the simple stories with the help of pictures... Students can write easy sentences according to the pictures. It is just like the picture book learning. Nowadays, picture books are more and more popular among primary school teachers, even those chief administrations. They also think picture books are one of the most important parts.As we all know, the origin of the picture books is Japan, but then develop quickly in European countries and America. Picture books appeared in our country recently. The picture books today are all translations. We should teach students the sterling English first, so the picture books appear. But from the research, most students face many different difficulties in English teaching.This research uses documentary study^ questionnaire survey and observational method to help the paper. They mainly solve two problems:1. The present situation of the picture book teaching in primary school, and the problems in the research.2. On the basis of the research and the problems, we can propose some suggestions to help promote the picture book teaching.First, there is a research in primary English teachers from Wujiang district, I find many problems:1. Primary English teachers don’t have enough understanding of picture book. Although many teachers know something about the picture books, they don’t know the original picture book enough.2. Some primary teachers don’t know how to teach picture books in class. They don’t know how to help students know well enough about the picture books.3. Teachers have different ideas about the learning aims of the picture books.4. They don’t know how to choose the right picture books, especially from students’ages.5. The teaching methods are not good enough.6. Evaluations are not deep enough for students.7. Teachers don’t have enough training about how to teach picture books.Then, we should propose some suggestions from all these problems. We can deepen the understanding of the picture books, increase the teaching time, choose the right picture books, get the help from government and the evaluation. Specially, from these aspects:1. Look—the colourful pictures,2.Guess—the continuous story,3.Read—funny words,4.Taste—significance meaning,5.Rewrite—the powerful end,6.Compile—their own picture book.Picture book teaching in China is just a start. Many teachers cannot totally understand how to use picture books in English teaching. This paper helps to find the present situation of the picture book teaching, the problems in teaching picture books and how to solve all these problems.
