Ye Shengtao was a great writer as well as a great educator in China. He devoted his whole lives to education and educational reforms. Because of his profound ideas of education, there exist a lot of his followers and researchers. In his many ideas of education, the language habit theory is the most creative and scientific one, which is attracting growing interests. The language habit theory can be summed up in one sentence: Successful language education is to develop good habits. In this paper, we study the content and the modern inspiration of his language habit theory. This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction of Ye’s life and the formation of his language habit theory, and the features of his theory are presented in the part. The second chapter explain the content of his theory, which including the basic connotation, opinions and ultimate aim of his theory. Through this chapter, his theory is generally introduced. The third chapter is the focus of this research. We make a careful comprehension of all specific habits in his theory, which are divided into habits of listening, speaking, reading, writing and self-studying. Based on the textual materials from Ye, the features and developing method of these habits are summarized. Also, the needs from primary and middle schools are considered in our research. The forth chapter summarizes the theory obtained in our research, and gives the modern inspiration of his theory in the current education for language. Our research of the Ye’s theory of habits carries on and develops his idea of education, and more importantly, our conclusions can be used for reference and enlightenment to the current education. Combing Ye’s classic education theory and current education, we will promote adolescents’ growth and development, enhance their language accomplishment, and make full use of the current language education in primary and middle schools.
