Ye Shengtao, a most famous Chinese linguistic, educationalist, and most reputed scholar of the Chinese language of modem times, left us a lot of works in the research field. Noted for his profound and intensive educational thoughts, he pointed out that Chinese is a tool subject and held the view that the cultivating students?ability in using their mother language correctly is the purpose of teaching Chinese. in compiling Chinese textbooks, Mr Ye advocated the principle of being scientific. 1-Ic also had his unique interpretation and view on both the features of textbooks and the compilation of textbooks for primary schools and middle schools. In view of the existing problem in the teaching of Chinese, he suggested promoting the qualities of teachers by defining national feathers of being a teacher, promoting teachers?morality and academic attainment on their own initiative, and researching into teaching methodology and theory. In brief, the elite of Ye Shengtao抯 theory lies in the pursuit of the goal that all the teaching is performed for the purpose of saving further teaching. He laid much emphasis on achieving the ultimate goal of teaching, that is, to enable students to learn by analogy and to be self-independent and self-reliant in study and finding a solution when putting the language in practical use. Mr. Ye抯 theory, which had a great influence in the Chinese language teaching in the past, has a significant guidance in the teaching of present day and even in the future.
